This is odd: just today I've posted our internship projects and they are all for paid positions. And actually nowadays all students are forced by the University to have a short internship and it doesn't have to include a wage! But I've deci

Mozilla should make more fuss about this because it's important. I see my family happily using Linux on their laptops because 80% of what they need is a browser. And Google with ChromeOS also thinks that a browser should, in time, be enough

Oh, it's not hard to find which model is certified. It's hard to actually find it selling in a store! Also, I don't want to buy a ThinkPad if I have to buy it with Windows then wipe that. So my choices are laptops that come with FreeDOS or

In Romania it's common practice to sell cheaper laptops running FreeDOS or some Linux (say, Acer with Linpus) with the expectation that people are just going to wipe it and install a pirated Windows on it. If you look at the online review f

The thing about Amazon is that they sell almost worldwide and they also have customer support. I wouldn't want to buy a System76 laptop in Romania and ship it back to the States if it needs service under the warranty.

I think we easily forget just how broken the rest of the OS were. If I evaluate Linux as if I am a few years back in time, I don't mind the lack of good QA. I've also broken an install because I tried an upgrade and there wasn't enough free

Nothing is made entirely by machines. At some point it's made by hand. The thing is software is a bit like doing clay pottery when it's not properly done. Once you add a bit of a systematic approach to it and you test is, review it, it beco

IT people from Romania are not leaving for the West as much as the West imagines. And part of those that leave come back. Working in IT in Romania is a good position socially and economically. You have a good salary and you are part of the

Programming is a way of modeling reality and a preference might reflect a bit of your own mind. Then again, people aren't always consistent, so it might not necessarily correlate strongly. Nice remark though!

Since the US has a habit of forcing it's practices on the rest of the world, I'm sure it would have an impact on the long term. Because of software patents, I already see programming and selling software in the US as a dangerous thing to do

Then I assume you are also not a big fan on any online service. An interesting trend I'm noticing is that people stop writing offline software. Pretty soon anything new you want will only be available as a service. What then?

I assume PayPal is able to do things that are much more interesting than just letting money in a bank deposit. They surely gain a lot just by knowing they can control the cashflow this way.

I'm not surprised. Only the "high end" laptops have a resolution that's not 1366x768 in Romania. I used to have a 14" Dell with a 1600×1200 resolution back in 2008. But in 2012 you really have to pay extra for something like that. 15.6 inch
