I never quite understood the usecase of having tabs inside the terminal emulator. Isn't it nice to have i3 instead?

Authorship is not a very well defined term, but I'm quite sure that by no definition can you be an author without actually contributing to the piece. I think we should allow to water down the term 'Author'.

Wow. I just found out about legacy admissions. To me that seems insane. This is not how it is supposed to be! I wouldn't want to apply there now. If I have to work really hard and other people get in by association ...

Yes, I want this as well. In the beginning I liked netflix because it felt as if everything was there, like on spotify. I always saw netflix just as a distributor of content produced by others. Then they started to make all their own shows

Oh, that would be great! I've never heard of that before. This is exactly what we need, removing the lock-in. I could buy something and then watch it on netflix or on amazon prime, doesn't matter! I would love it. Sad that it&

Good counter-point. A social network is not inherently bad. It could be a simple extension of our analog life, a simple tool to stay in contact with friends an family or share things with people that we do not have regular interactions wit

Every now and then there are these news, where platform owners "abuse" their power on the platform to do something in their favor. I remember an example where HN discussed about how "Amazon's choice" doesn't m

If systemd-adoption would make it harder to maintain a distro, the distros would not have adopted it. Instead, systemd solves a lot of problems for distro maintainers. The didn't just "gobble it up", they made a very measured

The new home directory does not need to be encrypted. It can easily be encrypted, but the main feature here is portability.

It is completly optional, also it is optional to use home encryption (this comes up a lot when people want to log in on a remote server with a user that uses homed). homed users and conventional users can exist side by side.

I recently rented a movie on amazon, and then I didn't have the option to get english subtitles, only subtitles in my native language. I wonder why that is, and I'm assuming it is because of some cumbersome contractual relations.

I think this is a cool art project to raise awareness for the worrisome side of classifications like that. I'd be interested to see how it is set up at the exhibition at the moment.

I guess it depends on the usecase. You mention a lot of scripting, and also the terminal. Would you also recommend vim for working on large projects with 100+ files? I believe in this case, a full on IDE is suited better. Also I'm not

This. First of all, I don't know about vim/neovim, but I think a lot of the issues apply there as well. When I develop software, I don't need an editor, I need a development environment. I spend 90% of my time reading code,

I got bitwig because I am a heavy linux user and wanted to start making music. The software itself works well, it's really great, but with VSTs it's quite tricky. I got a couple to work that explicitly support linux, but for examp

Interesting; functional programming was introduced to me through dr. racket scheme, and the core concept in there was that there is no mutable state. To me, having mutable state makes it imperative, you're not evaluating functions

This is not like the clojure is to java, it's only a syntax transformation, superficial. Usually lisp and FP means that you get immutable data structures and a good concurrency system, both of which you get in clojure. I looked at this

I'll add to the "meditation is a tool". In psychotherapy I have always encountered mindfulness as only a small part of a full treatment, not as a solution to everything. To me it is a specific tool as well, I use meditation t

As a sidenote to this, what is a good way to follow independently hosted blogs like this one? I don't have a medium account but I suspect there are follow features and you get a timeline of some sort. The blog doesn't seem to have
