Schools in poor towns don't have multiple levels or basements or even extra storage rooms. What you see is all you get. If there is enough space to have a room full of books, it would be better used as a publicly accessible set of sta

40 years ago, my public middle school would periodically pick books that weren't checked out for a couple decades. They'd rubberstamp "discard" over the library's ownership mark and put them in a pile that said &qu

It would be my hope that unlike landmines, these might have a remote off switch/signal that can disable them after the war ends. At the very least, the battery will die and it won't fly around anymore.

Don't forget the $10,000 annual limit of purchases. If you want to go heavy into TIPS, you can hit that limit pretty quick.

Rule of law will always apply to the commoners. Congress critters can speed on the highways and ignore the Do Not Call registry, but the rest of us still have to obey the laws.

Not the OP, but from a stock market perspective, improvement can mean "lay off workers, and raise subscription prices". Not good for the users, but good for the kinds of people who like reading news about IPOs.

In the US, cell towers have battery backups so emergency calls can still go through. I imagine most countries do too.

My understanding of the terminology is that: Meteor is a rock in space or in the atmosphere. Meteorite is the rock after it touches the ground. Falling/shooting star is the flash of light. I have never heard of meteor being the flash o

I don't know what their plan is, but that is one way to "own half". I'm really hoping that isn't their plan, but this administration seems to love shoveling tax money to people who don't deserve it.

I don't think LLMs will be the path to AGI, but anything nature can already build (a human mind) is proven to be possible. After that, it is just a science and engineering problem to replicate. There are those who believe that a human

My solution to doom scrolling on the desktop was to edit my /etc/hosts file to disallow me from going to the offending sites. After a few weeks, the habit was broken and I didn't even miss them anymore.

I'm not an economist, but if we have runaway inflation (not saying we will), the value of the dollar will plummet and it won't seem too strange. In the 1960s, Gilligan's Island talks of the Millionaire and His Wife. My pare

Georgia Tech has/had its own publishing company. They actually encouraged their faculty to write books like this. I can't seem to find any information about it, but I swear it was there when I took classes in the late 1990s.
