The dividing line in jobs nowadays seems to be headquarters or operations, brain or hands. If you're in operations, you are already or will be optimized to the extent possible and permitted. Not pretty, but the modus operandi. Pilots a

His use case should be solvable with a timer and a kill. Then asking for a timeout version for the syscall is for convenience. But that's a bad guiding principle for system interface design. You want to keep things simple and orthogona

For Google at least the SRE teams for infrastructure components are not large, neither in total nor relative to the huge infrastructure that they are managing. You could call this operational scalability, it is made possible by decoupling s

What I don't get around the new efforts around container-native storage: if you decide to build a new container-native storage system, why would you aim for block storage and not file storage? Block storage is not exactly a great fit f

Working on a distributed file system (Quobyte), I'd say the order of complexity is file > block > object. Why? Because a drop-in replacement for a local file system also needs to be good at high-performance concurrent block IO, o

Backups protect against bugs and operator errors and belong on a separate storage stack to avoid all correlation, ideally on a separate system (software bugs) with different hardware (firmware and hardware bugs), in a different location.

It's the promotion system. People are incentivized to work 2y on a project, launch, get promoted, move on. Coupled with no clear strategy other than "we need the next toothbrush" you get what you see.

Less downtime and automatic recovery, I'd say. When the host machine goes down, the scheduler will pretty quickly start the container on a new machine. There the container will startup much quicker than a VM would.

A good reason for running a database in a container is fault tolerance without setting up database replication. Put your database in a container, let it store its data on a network storage system (like a distributed file system). The contai

Some of the file systems come with native clients. I'd say for container environments that's a viable alternative to NFS. When done properly the native client can do low latency as it usually has the minimum number of network hops
