In the South Pacific island story, when the gold was lost, the money was lost. That was a loss of a physical substance with a unique combination of specific physical characteristics. If it had been silver, copper, platinum, rhodium, or ir

Sure, that makes sense. Wow, I didn't know it was cystic fibrosis. I like your comment about the medical care that you two are "supposed to require." :)

Keep up the good work. You'll be more independent when you stop depending on food stamps, but you're on your way. Also, I recommend ordinary reusable cups instead of plastic disposables.

Why the downvotes on onion's comment? I don't see anything factually incorrect about it.

I love the goat-herding idea, but here's something that may help you short of taking such a big step. Grab a plastic garbage bag, and go walk two miles out along a road, and then on the two miles back, pick up all the garbage you can.

Nevermind, I figured it out. I did Export some certs from Chromium and Import them into Firefox, but it wasn't working. However, when I restarted Firefox, it worked.

By the way, I looked in the list of trusted root CAs in Chromium, and I didn't see anything called "Positive SSL CA 2" there. If I had seen it, I could have just exported it from Chromium and imported to Firefox.

The purpose of any computer program is to produce side effects. A program which has no side effects has no observable behavior and is therefore useless. In that sense, side effects are good, so embrace them. That implies that the purpose

I'm pretty sick of all high-level languages actually. I even wrote my own functional programming language "Fexl", and I'm sick of it too. Here's a totally general purpose quicksort: # (sort keep compare xs)

I get pangs of nostalgia watching this thing. I'm old enough to have worked with punch cards, teletypes, mag tapes, line printers, front panel switches, and such -- in the '70s anyway. (... now where the hell are my cigarettes .

I admit that was an unfair swipe at formalism, but I do think that formalism is far more effective in the light of a clear, intuitive exposition that conveys the concept straight into the mind. Formalism is good for battening things down t

I like the simple explanation of K-Means, and I like the contrast with the dense set-theoretic language -- a prime example of "mathematosis" as W.V.O. Quine put it.

Why are females with CS degrees less likely to have Github pages than males with CS degrees? Is it because of the testosterone which tends to make males show off more than females? If not that, then what?
