I have only used ROS for a few simple projects, but I found catkin (which is actually a thin wrapper around cmake) relatively easy to grasp. As far as I know, catkin is actually an improvement over previous build system, rosbuild. You can l

First, define what do you mean by hardware, because the field is vast. Electronics design: https://contextualelectronics.com/ Programming embedded systems: http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920017776.

Nobody has mentioned Wacom Bamboo series digitizers, which is what I am using. It allows me to sync notes I'm writing on plain paper with my phone/tablet. It even tries to OCR my handwriting (which doesn't work flawlessly, b

I have been using the web interface on Android without installing anything. Home Assistant leverages web app manifest (essentially, creates an icon in apps list/homescreen which opens the web interface in a full-screen web browser).

For me, the most time-consuming part is drawing footprints for connectors and sockets. RJ-45 sockets and microSD sockets come to mind as my most memorable (footprint related) screwups.

From my personal experience: upstream packages get updated a lot more frequently, even faster than in debian-testing repo.

Some Bluetooth profiles can be used on iOS devices without MFI authentication chip on the Bluetooth device. Bluetooth audio/headset devices don't need MFI chip. Devices using Bluetooth serial port profile do need it.

+1 from me too- it's really nice soldering iron for the price.

I'm more interested in things like: if the diode is on for half the time (50% duty cycle), can I use 10mW? if I transmit a high frequency chirp with even less total duty cycle, can I use even more power? Not that it really matters in m

On a related note- do you know of any books that cover diode laser safety? Specifically, I'm working on a FMCW laser rangefinder (hobby project to teach myself more of analog electronics) and would like to know what is the maximum opti

With MEMS based gyros and accelerometers: not enough to maintain position. With much larger and more expensive gyros/accelerometers dead reckoning is enough to navigate without external navigation systems for at least a few hours.

Even using calibrated and temperature controlled consumer level accel/gyro sensors for dead reckoning results in estimated velocity error reaching few meters/s in a second or two. Current consumer level sensor quality is enough fo

I've accustomed myself to openocd, gdb and some small custom scripts (e.g. interpreting fault registers) Hehe, the world really is that small :) Say hi to Mark if you meet him, I haven't seen him in ages.

I could agree with you on gdb's user interface. However, working on embedded hardware, plain gdb and it's architecture-specific forks|variants have been the least fiddly things to use. The most recent examples I've stumbled u

I have a friend who runs a lifestyle business of: 1) One-off mechatronics projects: museum exhibits, cable-cams for filming companies, puzzles for escape-rooms etc. 2) Regional distribution and support for a particular brand of lasercutters

Is the actuation really the part which needs radiation hardening? The cameras, sensors and processing unit seems more likely affected by radiation than, say a battery and motor.

With product development times of 6-12 months, it doesn't make sense to pay 360k to get results in 3 years if you can pay 360k and get results in few months.

I too thought that ladder logic is horrible (and for certain tasks, it is). Ladder logic predates PLCS though- essentially the same notation was used when relays were used to implement it, and EEs were fine with that.
