Good cross-platform support is indeed very important for a programming language. The F# community is still small so there probably aren't many users on Linux and OS X. Don Syme (the creator of F#) has said that Microsoft will release the F#

11. F# F# is a mixture of C#, OCaml and Haskell. F# will be included in the next version of Visual Studio so it's no longer just a research language. Performance is similar to C# but coding in it is faster in my experience and above all a l

That's not a fair comparison. The equivalent would be Windows + VirtualBox + Linux.

Functional programming is more than a style. While programming in a functional style is possible in many languages it's very limited, even in a language like Scala. Regarding the hybrid languages i personally think that F# is relatively goo

Perhaps a strict Haskell 98 implementation? I really like Haskell but i'm still not convinced that laziness should be the default. It would be interesting to see what the trade-offs are.

F# uses it too for adding OO members to types: type Foo = ... member self.Bar(arg) = 'self' can be named as you like.

Amazon has said that they will offer Windows Server on EC2 this fall, see http://aws.amazon.com/windows/ Microsoft will also announce a cloud platform at PDC. I assume that it will be for hosting .NET code which may not be want you need.

The Dutch East India Company was founded in 1602 and was the first to issue stock. The company ended in 1798 when the government took over the company after it went into decline predominantly due to wars with Britain and France.

I've just read that ING has bought the British savings accounts from Landsbanki and another Iceland bank. That means your money is safe.

Mono is not far behind. .NET 3.5 still uses the 2.0 runtime. Many features like LINQ are supported. Web frameworks like ASP.NET MVC can run on Mono. Mono has Gtk for UI development on Linux. Creating a modern replacement for Gtk like WPF on

Hi Justin, could you comment on why you use both Python and Ruby? It seems odd for a small company to use two languages that are very similar.

I assume to show the type inference popups of Visual Studio. A better choice would have been to use the CopySourceAsHtml add-in and only capture the popups as images.

Some of his comparisons are true -- Haskell is relatively hard to comprehend for programmers who are used to imperative languages, but Haskell is imo the best language for learning functional programming techniques. The core of the language

I think it's great that Mozilla is promoting royalty free technologies. RAND licensing is fine if you're a megacorp, but for smaller companies and especially startups it can be a big hurdle. And the 'reasonable' part is often questionable i

IANAL but i think non-US startups are also targets for patent lawsuits if they have US users. And many startups have little chance of success if they have to stop serving US users.

I believe it's very likely that Microsoft will announce a cloud platform this year that is similar to Google's App Engine. Sun may do the same. It would be easier for MS and Sun to support multiple programming languages because all applicat
