My two cents: 1) Write programs easy to understand at first glance 2) Write code easy to delete 3) Write considering costs: target zero -or as low as possible- maintenance costs 4) Write code for both fun and profit

It is very cool to see @antirez dedicating time for testing Redis in exotic platforms, showing how different CPU architectures can affect performance of a widely used software. Kudos.

Does anyone know if there is a way for mapping virtual addresses to areas with zeroes and replacing it with the memset to 0 on write access, so software could be still efficient without calling calloc() instead of malloc()? (i.e. memset to

You can not avoid responses in clear-text quoting your encrypted emails, so that mechanism is broken by design: it should be a point to point encrypted mailbox.

Oracle should stop that, in my opinion. That attitude could kill Java in the long term.

Blaming Linus for whatever personal frustration with Linux is becoming a sport. From my side, I prefer simpler GUIs, without massive bloat.

Anyone knows how far is Apple from getting the following desktop system as one SoC? - 4GHz 12-core 64-bit ARM OooE with 256KiB L2 cache per core - 12MiB of L3 cache - Integrated graphics with 128MB eDRAM - PCI-Express buses - 35 GB/s D

That's scary. So all DDR3, an probably most DDR4 memories are affected by that. Anyone knows if ECC is protection enough?

The no-driver Uber arguments as profitable future it is crazy stuff, in my opinion. Could be as simple as Uber being a bubble? How much will take until that bubble bursts?

The "24 GFLOPS" in RP come from the GPU (Videocore IV, 32-bit precision) [1]. The PS3 does more than 230 GFLOPS, just with the Cell processor (1 dual threaded CPU and 7 vector units -CPUs with wide SIMD, working in 256KB local scr

Thank you very much, Riku! Kudos and glory! :-) Debian muscle is behind many other Linux distributions, and Debian maintainer work is fundamental.

And again, Stallman is right. Despite how much convenient, cheap, and easy Skype could be. P.S. Is today the "day against Stallman" in Hacker News? Come on.

Westworld (2016) is an amazing show. In my opinion it is more about how real it feels, than the thematic itself. I'm convinced that same approach would work for other genres, not just sci-fi. It is a kind of hyper-realist cinema, where

For new PCs, Intel chips are amazing. However, e.g. updating a desktop PC with a 2.8GHz (3.46GHz turbo, 8MB L3 cache) Core i7 from 2009 with a decent enough video card it is not: spending 300-400 USD on a new CPU for just 30% performance in

It is an interesting overview of Game Boy development: it includes hardware description (CPU, memory map, etc.), per-line interrupt ("raster effects"), palette, priorities, layers, sprites, sound, etc.
