Point is, actually, that it will be no more difficult to use than a UI with plain graphics, so if the (ugly) leather makes people feel better about it, why not? No, I still don't like it, but the thesis in the article makes sense.

Personally, I think the model the designers built on activities makes perfect sense an is very interesting on a technical level, but as much as you explain them to me, it still doesn't do what I want, need or expect sometimes. Activities ar

If you are a Mac user, Lion's Mail is the first desktop client I can tolerate since April 2004.

They've had the iOS 5 beta available since June and they didn't bother to fix it before the actual release. If that doesn't say that they don't care, I don't know what else.

When it launched, the mobile Gmail app was great. Unfortunately they decided to break scrolling by poorly reimplementing it in JS and it's all downhill since then.

I'm baffled that Google, of all companies, can't make a decent mobile web app. The first Gmail versions from years ago on the iPhone were beautiful and they degrade with every new version.

Probably yes. I can't find the source, but I think I remember him saying something along the lines of "if the firmware cannot be updated, it can be considered akin to hardware and doesn't need to be free".

I was surprised to see Safari faster than Chrome in most cases. I was expecting the reverse. (same setup you have)

The app solution would have some value for the content providers, the Google solution of scraping the web would give most of the value back to Google.

Well, in that case you would say that Microsoft is trying to survive by eliminating competition on scarce resources. But then, I don't think Microsoft is dying.

Do you really call "sweeping the crap under the carpet" "solving" the problem? I call it a workaround, at best. Users will often want the used space back too, not just hide the icon.

Read the whole article. It matters for developers and for the platform. Even if users don't (know they) care. Users are missing security fixes, developers can't use new features in new versions.

> "Just start typing their name" You can almost get this on the iPhone by swiping to the left of the first home screen and using spotlight. I use that all the time, for contacts and to launch apps hidden in folders I rarely use.

iOS definitely doesn't retain zoom levels between pages and never has. On zooming in to content (actually it zooms in on page blocks) I disagree, but I'll leave it at personal preference. Android zooms in at a fixed zoom level and reflows

There is probably something wrong with your iPod. I'd take it to the Apple Store. iOS 5 works fine on a 3GS, and your iPod has iPhone 4-comparable hardware.

He says he knew about this behavior, and he also explicitly said (on Twitter, can't be bothered looking for it) that he was not going to report bugs to Apple during the beta. I guess Marco just prefers venting after the fact.

I'm assuming you have the same concern about your emails, right? By the way iMessages are encrypted end-to-end (but I wouldn't expect you to believe or trust Apple on this).
