Device drivers are Linux device drivers, while not the most stable, that interface is quite mature and people have been mantaining device drivers for a decade. In my experience UI code gets messy much faster and easier than lower level. No,

They could be "encouraged" to only use public APIs and not change the base OS, which would make porting much much easier. This is of course assuming the problem is really a technical one and the carriers/manufacturers care at all about supp

That is not entirely true. However, I think the issue with defending the language is that its more fervent supporters are using it as a confrontational political leverage instead of just plain culture.

pg may well say that HN has not become Reddit, but it has. (yes, my account is less than a year old but this is a fresh start, my other account is 6x older)

No, your point is –in your own words– that, since it’s at best incremental protection, it isn’t worth the non-trivial costs. Which is not a good point because, as I said and you agreed, all security is at best incrementally better protect

I’m making the point that that issue alone (which I consider very serious and hindering the ecosystem) didn’t kill Android.

For that matter, who is going to buy an Android 2.3 device now, since there's no reason to believe it will run Android 4.0?

Prototypes, sure, but people always mention it to say “You can write apps in Python on Android”. That’s simply not true. SL4A is kinda like PhoneGap: you can use it, but you will not get a quality app out of it. That might be fine for your

I can't comment on the other options because I haven't investigated enough yet, but people should definitely stop suggesting SL4A as a viable option to developing Android apps. It's not.

You also don’t want it in the released app so that random guy in the coffee shop cannot connect to your app and mess with it while people use it.

The article talks about “mobile browsers”. Neither iOS, Safari or even WebKit are mentioned. Why does the submission title say “iOS browsers”?

do you have better sources? it seems simple math to me. I have also seen a few articles from artists (not record companies) that say the same thing. if you have proof of the contrary it would make me feel better.

Apps and zooming and reflowing text are just workarounds. I don’t want an app, I want a decent website that can render on a smaller screen. Not hard.

Incredible the cottage industry of HN clients that sprouted just because the website is stuck in 1998. Goes to show how the community is so important it can trump design.
