I wonder why libstdc++ development is so slow. Regex support has been missing since TR1.

I use both Firefox and Chrome. But I prefer Firefox. Better addons and extensibility were already mentioned. But one thing that seems to be commonly overlooked is the superior typography of Firefox. Firefox even does stuff like ligature

Use https://github.com/syohex/emacs-git-gutter-fringe if you want the symbols in the fringe. But sadly the Emacs mode calls git synchronously which can lead to a significant slow down when switching buffers. I hope that gets fixed.

GNU Make already is a programming language. It's just not a very good one. Wouldn't Scheme be helpful to your "don't write programs in Make"-attitude? I mean if only few people know scheme they'll be less likely to hack your Makefile.

CMake is a great example on problems with DSLs. Simply not everybody is a good language designer. CMake uses a pretty horrible language and comes with its own kinds of strangeness. I have used it quite extensively and it's probably the w

Using make gets quickly really ugly. I wrote many Makefiles in my life and if you have to try to stick to GNU Make. At least it provides some basic functionality. But even that gets nasty quite soon when you need a simple thing like cond

There is already a Chromium plugin for pdf.js available. I hope Google starts using pdf.js so far it's better than the Chrome pdf viewer except for the startup time.

If I remember correctly the PDF Spec says the files should be read backwards. The object table is at the end of the file.

Chrome's PDF viewer lacks the basic features one expects from a PDF viewer. It doesn't make sense to abandon the concept of pages or not support ToC. Those things are essential in PDFs. pdf.js handles all of those things. And there were

The Chrome PDF Viewer is not really useful. There is no table of contents. You can't jump to specific pages. And so on. It is also closed source. I wish Google would rather abandon their current viewer and start contributing/using pdf.j

Those constants are meant to be used in low level floating point library code. So bit patterns are critical here if you don't want these functions broken in a subtle way. Here is the patch that introduced the bug http://www.sourceware.org/

Matlab and PHP are very similar in their history. They weren't invented by programming language designers or compiler writers. The creators saw a problem and came up with a makeshift quick solution. Which sucked but was good enough to solve

Well Sun did learn from it. They started adopting x86 and Linux initially. But then they realised they'd only make themselves obsolete by this and stopped this. They released OpenSolaris to push Solaris against Linux. SGI had a lot of probl

Sorry, but how can you not get this? The smallest subset defines what you can use at least in the core. You have to add workarounds to make it work. Which takes up time of developers and increases the code complexity. Every configuration op
