It isn't actually _necessary_ for a P=NP proof to be constructive. A constructive proof would probably be easier to reason through, but it is prossible to prove the existence of an algorithm without providing one.

That's exactly what I thought. In the context of Adams' mind experiment there's a problem with this approach: the aliens need to now both there is a goal to dancing or conversing well, and what that goal is. (Which is confounded a bit by th

I guess I'm alone in this, but I find page and window layouts built around a strict grid really strange looking. They look blocky and mechanical; full of rivers of space not unlike like poorly typeset text. I find that space can help move t

Isn't every computer scientist supposed to work on P=NP in their sleep? Or maybe it's their lack of sleep. I forget who it was that said it first, but one of my profs relayed it as serious advice: that every computer scientist should dable

"Cigarette smokers also seem to have a lower chance of developing Parkinson’s" I realize it's not really a science article (it's even possible all the information on Parkinson's came directly from Brin himself), but they didn't say cigarett

I would loath to work for a place where I were just "work for hire". Case in point: I was laid off at the last place I worked. My direct manager explained the situation personally, apologized profusely. And then acted as a reference for my

This attitude is perplexing to me. a) If you have internet access, why would you need to buy a book? b) Unless you're a strict Prolog or ML enthusiast, Objective C is similar enough to what you already know that you could probably be produc

I'm not a video expert, but I did write some software for muxing and demuxing for a company I worked for some time ago. The major problem I had was that video and audio are stored at different "frame rates" (almost in a literal sense). A fr

Reminds me of the old adage "The Lisp programmer understands the value of everything, and the cost of nothing." For a great many applications, most programmers don't need to think too much about the underlying hardware (which is awesome). U

Clif Bars (in particular) might not be a good pick. Clif Bars (and likely other energy bars) should be eaten along with a lot of water - generally 1-2 liters. Potable liquids as I understand is much harder to come by than food. OTOH, I've o

The thing of it, to me, is that policemen carry an array of weapons. Mace, a taser, a tonfa (a nightstick), and a gun. A person that heavily armed is a force to be reckoned with. Intimidating, deserving of fear. If you're the man with the g

They accused him of libel, actually. In the UK you can both be telling the truth and be guilty of libel. (Hence the hubbub there about libel reform)
