I watched Gilbert Strang's video lectures on linear algebra (the MIT freshman course) for preparation for my PhD qualifier exam, and as a third year grad student, I could appreciate the relevance of almost every single topic in the cla

Well, if I remember my university's beginner linear algebra course, there were many topics on the syllabus only due to historic accident, ancestor worship, and theoretical necessities: I remember parallelepipeds, Cramer's rule, so

Can this logic be applied to another environment that has had a ton of money poured into it? Specifically, .NET. Can you replace Ruby/Python in the question with C# and if so, why doesn't the latter benefit from money and experien

I've been aiming to write a Rayleigh random number generator-driven alarm app for my iTouch (to do random-phasic sleep, e.g., countdown 20+X minutes, X drawn from a Rayleigh(20) distribution). If something like that could integrate with you

I think poepping's comments here are the most accurate so far (everyone else has been great also!). I myself replied to the author of the original piece with a tidbit that poepping elaborates on further. I said, "I would just add that I sus

Does anyone know how hard it is to write a code highlighting mode for vim where it uses normally uses latex highlighting, and then switches to C or Python or whatever programming highlighting inside special delimiters, like "\code{}"? Then

Joe, are you a web programmer? I'm really interested in why people don't get LP because it was love at first sight for me, in theory at least. It'll help bridge the gap between writing journal papers that contain the theory and the code tha

I program a lot of Matlab (going to switch to NumPy any day) for my signal processing research and I too just discovered literate programming. I think it's an incredibly good idea, to switch the status of code and comments---holding myself
