That's one of the themes in "Schismatrix": part of mankind turn their back on technology (blamed for disasters like the melting of the ice caps) and stay on Earth, remaining stagnant for centuries. The remainder, not allowed

Thanks! I've been meaning to read those for a while. I'll start with "Consider Phlebas".

Hey, thanks for the comment. I totally respect the authors for writing hard sci-fi space opera. It's just that... the bleak hopeless future theme is getting a bit long in the tooth, you know? If I want to feel depressed I can just turn

Asteroid mining, if it ever happens, won't be done by poor exploited people toiling under the sun with pickaxes. It will be very expensive, and most likely fully automated. Even today Rio Tinto operations are becoming increasingly more

I liked the hard sci-fi elements in The Expanse, but the idea of people mining asteroids in poor third world-like conditions makes absolutely no sense to me. Or an evil megacorp that murders millions of people with no adequate explanation.

I wasn't reading it correctly, it does work for characters > 127. For pure ASCII you wouldn't even need t1

> I personally didn’t know of this bit twiddling hack and am grateful to learn about the approach in Muła’s code Yeah the last line had me scratching my head for a bit. Cool stuff.

Cool trick, but if I'm reading this correctly the test fails for characters with codes larger than 127

Not an expert, but integer overflows getting silently truncated sounds pretty terrible. I understand there are safe arithmetic libraries, but overflow exceptions should have been built right into the VM

Looks interesting, thanks for the recommendation. Another one is "The Toaster Project", about how a guy made (well, sort of) a toaster from scratch: http://www.thomasthwaites.com/the-toaster-project/

The nice thing about C is that it's so small that you can hold every corner, nook and cranny of the language in your head. There must be less than a dozen people in the world that can say that about C++.

Don't know about kiosks, but QML is quite popular in applications like in-vehicle infotainment systems.

You should negotiate working remotely and move out of the US, with that kind of income you could live like a king in most of the rest of the planet. I'm not even being snarky

The idea in those 1970s proposals was to build power satellites with materials mined on the Moon. I guess this sounded more realistic back when the Apollo landings were still within living memory.

If that's too simple for you, you may have fun with the strlen implementation in glibc: https://sourceware.org/git/?p=glibc.git;a=blob_plain;f=strin...
