Excellent post. Even more depressing, the author didn't discuss the fact that when this young researcher—who just finished a PhD and postdoc training in a specific research area—applies for her first grant, she is effectively required

So, we recently had a bunch of articles coming out on "the fundamental insecurity of USB" [1]. How does that jive with a USB-based security key? Can't this be "flashed" like any other USB device? [1]: https:/&

The article argues pretty strongly that Uber is a horrible company, which isn't really news to anyone. I'm missing, though, the leap from that argument to the idea that (quoting the article tagline) "Sharing economy companies

I'm guessing I'm simply not considering the target audience, but so far as I know the groups (people who communicate primarily via spreadsheets) and (people who know what an API is) have a fairly small overlap. Maybe I'm just

What a horrible, horrible headline. Mary's analysis is incredibly detailed, extrememly informative, and FREE. This link-bait headline chose to ignore all the content and focus exclusively on the fact that the plots are ugly. Strangely

I'm not seeing this as an improvement. I'm familiar with PHP coding, and over the past few years the community has come up with a set of standards in the form of the PSR documents ( http://www.php-fig.org/psr/

This is almost exactly my story as well. One point he doesn't mention is that there are many interesting problems in the "real world". Lots of academics just point to industry in general and say, "no freedom, no thanks

One possible reason is that the PhD in some fields can be an "easy" way to get a paying position after graduating. There are a lot of smart people graduating from undergraduate programs, and there is a general paucity of good jobs
