That's too bad, I wish R could be better and easier for these people, but I don't think it warrants your hyperbole. I can point to many of my own anecdotes where R has saved millions of dollars by empowering analysts to conduct

I have a lot of experience teaching non-programmers R. Most of them come from an Excel/SQL background. I have found the amount of weirdness that presents a real problem is very low. And when it does get weird, I usually advise we just

Completely agree. dplyr is nice enough but the verbose style gets old fast when you're trying to use it in an interactive fashion. imo data.table is the fastest way to explore data across any language, period.

HN is predisposed to hate R because everyone here is coming from a "real" programming context. Their concerns are generally valid, but they should keep in mind a lot of people using do not have a software development background an

I'm the same way. People always nag me to eat breakfast but that actually just makes me hungrier and throws off my schedule. Generally if I don't eat anything I won't get hungry for a few hours after waking up, until 11-11:30

I actually disagree. I found what finally led to me using VIM was enabling VIM keybindings in RStudio. It's an emulated VIM setup, so not every command is supported, but it does have the advantage that at any point Insert mode works pr

I was referring to the removal of the "Beginner's Guide" in the wiki, now replaced by the "Installation Guide" that has way less context. Which is fine if you already have a nontrivial amount of linux/arch expe

You sound like a jaded professional, but keep in mind most people are not working mathematicans and never will be, so anything they hear from the pros they're going to take at face value. When it comes to the general layperson, I think

R notebooks are the bees knees and frankly I'm surprised Jupyter hasn't borrowed more from them. It's so much easier being in plain-text until render time, and the output is easier to manage because you can trivially decide w

You want the data.table [1] implementation of dcast and melt. They support multiple pivot values, inline aggregation, are super fast, and are easy to use compared to trying to wrap your brain around gather/spread. Frankly I think Hadle

To use a math analogy, I think of idioms as solutions to generalized coding problems. If you recognize your situation as a special case of the general form you can save yourself some time thinking through the implementation and make it easi
