Spoken like someone who has never had to teach non-programmers from complete scratch. Yes it would be ideal to spend hours setting up the conceptual framework for environment management. But now you’re teaching a “Python conceptual framewor

This is the exact same dilemma that you face in any other job. Working extremely hard and burning yourself out does nothing except cover up the problem that the function you are providing is under-resourced.

Not bad, very similar to dplyr syntax. Personally i’m too used to classic SQL though and this would be more readable as CTEs. In particular how would this syntax fair if it was much more complicated with with 4-5 tables and joins?

I don't know, I can see it both ways. I think it depends on programming context. On one hand you're right that it's annoying and a technically unnecessary gotcha, but for some Python use cases it simplifies the mental model t

What I do now is I write a comment like this in my IDE: # a regex that selects <something> regex = And then copilot/supermaven auto-completes it. If that doesn't work, I ask GPT-4o/Sonnet. If that doesn

Even economically mediated third places are being phased out in some respects. When I was a teen we often hung out at a local McDonalds. Super cheap food, free refills, as long as you didn't cause trouble you could stay for awhile. I w

Max context of claude is a lot higher than 5 files when you use projects. However, the struggle i’ve found with projects is integrating changes rapidly. You end up reuploading files constantly. Cursor.sh is a pretty good alternate but I fin

There is a time and place for demographic accuracy. If you are shooting some kind of historical reenactment I can see the argument it enhances immersion (or at very least, doesn't break immersion) to use actors that fit the demographic

Seems like they would have a lot more to lose as well. A scheme where Red Bull is helping athletes cheat is front page news. It would be catastrophic to their reputation. Much bigger deal than the athlete themselves getting caught.

I found myself nodding along to some parts of this (hiring practices, company types) but I found the endless complaining about bad engineering practices frustrating to read. Running a company requires making tradeoffs. Everyone always think

You don’t have to wait that long for this to become an issue. If your parents started having kids at 25, and you start at 25 (late by historical standards but almost early by modern), they’re at least 50, probably even pushing 60 if it’s no

If you are building a production app that uses python in a containerized way, you may find yourself rebuilding the containers (and reinstalling packages) multiple times per day. For us, this was often the slowest part of rebuilds. UV has dr

I don't know. I bought into the Python hype and after a few years I've found myself missing R. If you're using the full python ecosystem more power to you...but for straight up data analysis and statistics, R is unbeatable.

I don’t know. The whole thing feels pretty insular. Who even pays attention to this kind of content that isn’t in the industry? The general public doesn’t care about this. An actually bad example of corporate PR is spinning oil spills or da

Very cool. When GPT-4 first came out I tried some very naive approaches using JSON representations on the puzzles [0], [1]. GPT-4 did "okay", but in some cases it felt like it was falling for the classic LLM issue of saying all th

I was recently faced with this exact offer at seed stage vs a series B with a similar salary. YMMV but what I found when I ran the numbers is the series B offer had a lottery ticket with a similar risk/reward profile to the seed stage.

Pretty sure transcription is done locally on Pixel phones and it's pretty good. Not as good as ChatGPT, but most of the way there. If current iOS is like a 50, Pixel is like a 90 and OpenAI is like 98.
