I'm deriving a perverse kind of pleasure from all this. Maciej Ceglowski has a fantastic talk called Haunted By Data, where he compares data to radioactive waste: we collect a lot of it, and ultimately don't know how to handle it

I feel sorry for you. In my experience, there is little you can do to change the mind of such a person, and yet living with them can be constant embarrassment.

I work at CERN, so Brian Cox is an obvious choice as far as I'm concerned. Tangentially, Adam Steltzner (the engineer who lead the Entry Descent and Landing of Curiosity) is another one of those "used to be a rockstar" types.

There was a geekhack post on this sort of general idea, but it hasn't seen activity for a while now: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=84985.0 Looks stunning to me. The rather underrated Cherry ML switches strike th

Haha, I predict 2018 will be the year of the "I failed at my startup and didn't write a Medium piece" Medium piece. Similar to the "I quit Facebook/cut the cord but it's no biggie" Medium post.

Sounds like a great direction to be moving towards. Much more grip on your social media, and you using it rather than the other way around.

There's the rub. If the government made a neutral internet a human right, or increased competition by breaking up monopolies, the idiots who think they can get away with offering just Facebook would get royally shafted because consumer

You're missing the point. Why should we regress? The system, as it exists, freely allows these fabled old people of yours to access Facebook. But in letting net neutrality evaporate, the rest of us get screwed for no benefit. Jesus, ne

That's what OP is saying though. That there is no reason we couldn't have both waterproofness and a headphone jack. Legions of android phones are, of course, examples of this.

I did read the article, and the reason you gave was "I didn't want to be too rash". Which kind of serves my point. You wrote a 100,000 word article on quitting Facebook without even quitting it! You're right though, and

Quiet good work I cannot speak to, but two that inspire me are the former Guns n Roses rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin and Mark Knopfler. Stradlin quit drugs, quit the band even when the band was at its peak, and basically makes music for hi

Different strokes I guess. I liked that the authors took great pains to stick to highlighting the nuanced nature of the debate. They agreed with Damore where pertinent, but also disagreed with a lot of the conclusions that he derived.

I sympathise with the woman saying she'd much rather just focus on code rather than social justice debates. But, as flippant as it is for a guy to say it, it's their cross to bear isnt it? Women in tech. Because, if they don'
