These are some of the worst designed charts. I had to download the CSV to figure out that the x-axis is age. Once I figured it out the bottom right chart was chilling.

The view that web apps can only be for simple things is a dated perspective, but also probably a symptom of the fact that it's not really possible to take full advantage of many CPU cores in a web application. An in-browser photo edito

This is not accurate. Companies hold back some stock during their IPO for various reasons. Amazon held back 23 million shares. It also has repurchased a fair number of shares it holds as "treasury stock" on its balance sheet that

Kind of curious: How much lower you want them to go on the power/heat metric? Your current CPU is an 84W TDP part. A Ryzen 7 1700 has twice the number of cores and draws 65W with stock settings. The 1700 can get hot, but really only if

While the full root cause has not yet been found or resolved the limited issues have been pretty reliably resolved by disabling ASLR. Whatever the root cause it is likely the issue can be fixed through BIOS/microcode updates. The numbe

If the tool always makes a large blob of noise to hide the HTML in, and accepts an arbitrary number of key/html pairs it seems like this could work in the browser. Would seem to just cost disk space to be viable.

Thank you. I hadn't heard of this concept before. I think it could be relevant here. If the encryptor offers multiple inputs, one a dummy "sure, here is my password, officer" HTML and passphrase, the other the sensitive one t

There are multiple examples of people who are not overclocking at all and have gone to great lengths to ensure everything in their BIOS was properly configured. There does seem to be a real issue here. My money is on memory controller and i

This is a strange article. Not sure why it has so much traction on hacker news. Seems to just take Intel press releases and spit them out with some prose. It doesn't say much, doesn't add much, parrots Intel marketing and performa

There is nothing "communist" about the article. It is a critique of the flaws of our existing crony capitalist economies and how the real "welfare" is provided mostly to the elite. It concludes not with some call to junk

I'm not going to bother dissecting the logical fallacies and projection oozing from your post. Instead I'll point out the factual inaccuracy: The author does not provide a "one-idea panacea". He uses a single over-archin

Apparently someone took notice. A few minutes ago a reply was added by a Microsoft employee stating a fix has been deployed. Wish they would have provided more details, but glad they finally listened after. Only took 4 months.

CoffeeScript was never the "default". Since the asset pipeline was added new rails projects contained only a single 'application.js' which included any default JS libs. There has never been coffeescript in a default rail

You are comparing release notes for a beta to an actual release. Based on previous rails releases, by the time 5.1 rolls out the releases notes will get much more detailed and resources like guides.rubyonrails.org will be updated to reflect

My comment was meant to point out how frequently the Geneva Convention is ignored by nations today. Clearly we need a similar convention to protect our increasingly critical digital infrastructure. However, our inability to enforce the curr

We need to get better at following the current Geneva Convention before we can hope to enforce a digital version.

I used to think PHP was amazing and build tools were weird and unnecessary when I built things mostly in PHP. It's hard to see the point of many tools if you aren't working with the all the time. I think this is the product of peo

Interesting. I guess Pypa feels Python also needs a flexible DSL and dependency groups in addition to the pip-tools lock file solution.

The purpose of a lock file is to separate the concepts of "acceptable versions" from "the list of last exact versions I used and were working". These are very different things and requirements.txt doesn't do both wi

It was an attempt to directly address the FUD about running python code during dependency resolution. You're doing this to run more python code from the project's author so this seemed odd and an irrational fear. Maybe my tone cam

Yes, source control. Installing the project would cause it to be built from the lock file (assuming the Pipefile hasn't changed). This will mean your users won't get "some version" of a library you depend on between veri

Your lock file goes into version control. This ensures all your developers and environments are using the exact same version of every library. You generate a new lock file when upgrading/adding libraries. Don't be so scared. Ruby
