HN is still my favorite social media site. All the best online communities I've kept up with since the 90's have been community-driven BBS derivatives attached to a centralized entity where the community discussion is only tangeni

It would be interesting to know why Mark didn't choose this option because Alphabet had already structured their company exaclty like this, separating Google from Other Bets, and so there was a clear precedent from a peer. Did Mark eve

This should definitely be fixed, but this applies only to network connections that are established before the VPN is run. Since you can't connect to .onion services before running the VPN, this is less of an issue for this type. Apple

This is specifically mentioned in Buddhism as one of the ten hindrances, "sīlabbata-parāmāso," attachment to rules and rituals. In Christianity, this is similar to the idea of works-righteousness which was the basis of Martin Luth

This might be true, but I wonder if there's really anyone so unlikable that they couldn't find an audience in the long tail. Extremism unfortunately seems to be able to find a way despite deplatforming. See examples like Nick Fuen

The first person who gets charged this fine could make a lot of money from publicity if they're smart about it. It's nice that this has been so widely circulated.

Evolution depends on multiple minds coordinating. A virus’ fate will be decided by thinking people eventually. It’s not fair to talk about something as broad as evolution if you only focus on the early period where determinism is easy to re

I like this explanation, but I might say abstractions are mutually translatable in a society. People having similar ideas is convenient but not necessary. I could imagine a society where everyone thought differently but used AI as a univers

I’m talking about how the framing makes people think and how we can drift toward abstraction over reality. When we talk about the police or the state being created to do something, we’re implying that the intention involved in its creation

I'm not upset in either case, but that's another good example of the problems in attributing personified intelligence to an abstraction. Especially in the early days, people tended to substitute "God" with "evolutio

My answer would be that individual intentions are ultimately the only thing that matters, but they are shaped by cultures which use abstractions to communicate and connect. Social control means learning which abstractions will stick, like f

In these discussions, there's always an implicit assumption of certain intentions being the "real" ones. Statements like "police were created to..." first imply that there was a creator whose intentions define the p
