I know what you mean since I develop in Scala for a living. I wonder though if the complexity isn't with Scala itself but rather the abstractions that are created to enable functional style programming. I recently bought the Oreilly fu

Just to give you some perspective, I grew up in Concord which is about 25 miles east of San Francisco. My dad bought our house in the late 60's because that was the closest place to SF that he could afford for our family. He commuted f

When I think of functional programming I think of the verbs or actions. So instead of worrying about the onion, I would think about dicing. There is an input, onion and output, diced onion. That is a function.

Actually it is be a drop-in replacement for Java and I would argue with case classes, lack of ceremony, no primitive types, etc that it is a simpler language than Java.

Yup its true and the norm. I made about $6K over the summer months and my college tuition was $350 a semester. Shared an apartment for $200/month. The thought of taking out a loan never entered my mind.

Yup. They're not because people fought back in the 60's to preserve large amounts of land in Marin. Don't expect any different in SF. The existing residents don't want more density and rightly so since it lowers their standard of living. Th

Sort of funny how the article is about packing them in even tighter in SF and the picture is of a bunch of empty hills behind the GG bridge.

I don't understand what C, below and above mean. Making the bass and treble clef notes the same seems like a win. Other than that the traditional notes seem pretty easy to read.

Was Play 1 or Play 2 tested? I thought Play ran on Netty so I'm surprised it didn't fair better.

The actual technology is only one part of running a successful software business and not the most important from my experience. Just copying someone else's solution does not necessarily mean that you can be as successful as the originator.

Such a sad and unfortunately typical attitude of enterprise java developers. No wonder anyone with with any interest in programming avoids java like the plague.

I've used groovy in the past on grails projects but haven't adopted it more because its dynamically typed and slower than java. I have adopted scala as my main language however, since it can be used as a direct replacement for java.

"The real problem is SF prohibiting any dense housing from being built anywhere in the city" Huh? In most of SF the houses are about 1 inch from each other. It must have the densest housing on the west coast.

Can't you mock out the calls with something like http://code.google.com/p/powermock/ ? Or introduce an intermediate object? Or use Spring? Or test using groovy which i think you can redefine methods.

1) That is probably quite slow since you're creating a new class not just a new object. 6) Sure, now let's see all the boilerplate builder code you need to need to make that work. 7) Of course you can check for exceptions, you just don't ne
