You're probably right– at least, I hope you're right. Looks like everything went as expected though, so congratulations to everyone who worked on it. Still waiting to see what they collect...

The probability of such a program being developed is diminished by how depressing its results would likely be to its own author. It would be interesting, though, wouldn't it... now you've got me thinking.

I see they're indexing renren– any chance for mixi indexing as well?

Just read that too. That's not much of a safety factor! Still, it's quite a feat and I hope it continues smoothly.

I highly recommend learning dvorak. I've switched the keys on every MacBook since 2007 and the difference is huge (not just speed either, but mostly comfort/ease). It took about two weeks to bring myself up to the same speed as qwerty, and

You're going to have to stay somewhere a lot longer than a semester to find students/teachers to really connect with. CivE, CS, painting, doesn't matter. I completely understand the disappointment at going to school and finding out that hey

Just checked my shelf– I have the third edition of Harmony and 4th of Counterpoint, terse is a fair judgement. I'll have to give the later editions a look, but judging by the reviews (and the Revised by MARK DEVOTO tag...) I'm not going to

Exactly. I just turned 20, could've gotten my bachelor's two years ago, and yet I still don't have one. And so what? I've spent every day loving the experience of whatever it is I'm doing, I don't even regret exploring all the dead ends. It

Also, a little note to anyone who has decided to either skip or take a break from school at any point in their career: There's no shame in saying that you weren't ready for it then. It doesn't mean you couldn't handle the material, or the e

As long as you stay busy, that's the key. I left high school after one year to do my own thing and since then have had some pretty extraordinary experiences. I recently left the institution where I had a full scholarship and will instead be

Perhaps relevant to some other HN users... This list has a recommendation for Introduction to Tonal Theory over Piston's Harmony. I am not familiar with the former, but I found Walter Piston's books to be fascinating and generally very good

I'm not quite ready to cast my vote for Python, but this statement is so true. Basically all of my notes from planning stages as well as algorithms I'm looking at or working on... might as well already be in the interpreter.

Looks like a pretty simple device. Now, when can we start seeing more improvements (particularly use/assembly related) on open source EEGs? I'm far more interested in monitoring my brain activity outside of my psychologist's office. Odd sig

Hah no no, ALT as in Assistant Language Teacher. The go-to "career" to anyone who speaks English (or any European language as well I suppose) and has no other reputable skills (okay fine... experience) to immigrate to Japan.

Are you in Tokyo? Space is prized but at this size even in Yokohama, living out of a hotel room downtown cost barely more than these apartments. And that was before I caught on to all the 50000/mo ALT-havens...

The very reason why even I'll miss big bookstores is because of their nonchalance towards what they're selling. You can stay in the store for hours, look at anything, bring a book to the cafe or any number of seats in the corner and read, e
