But it isn't a new thing on Linux. lxc, vserver, openvz, and other projects also do what zones and jails do. Docker is not the same.

Sort of yes, sort of no. I also agree that Docker is incredibly buzzwordy and that most of the bullshit and hype around Docker could be done with other tools But the libcontainer networking stuff and integration with cgroups does provide mo

Docker was a wrapper around lxc which ran an executable as PID1. Docker is now a wrapper around libcontainer which runs an executable as PID1, with a build system for those containers (Dockerfiles) and support for features exposed by libcon

Except that this also describes vserver, lxc, solaris zones, freebsd jails, and numerous other container virtualization solutions. Docker is best described as application virtualization.

Checking IOPS of a fully-virtualized system (even with virtio, and it's unclear from your post whether you were using it or not) is not at all a relative comparison to something which is literally a process on the host system.

I find the number of people schilling for Docker mindblowing. "I don't know much about LXC, and I don't know what the defaults are, but I assume that this trivial wrapper around LXC provides more security".

Exactly what security features do you think Docker is providing that LXC isn't?

The idea that you need a Xeon for VM "stability" and "decent speed" is one of the more asinine things I've ever heard. There's no real advantage to a Xeon over an i5 for 99% of developer workload.

Vanilla, because I never have any idea what plugins are going to be installed on the systems I touch (probably none). It's the same argument for learning vi. It's there everywhere. Similarly, it probably has no plugins.
