IMO citizens being well armed is deterrence. It makes the likelihood of 'evil martial law' government less likely by increasing the perceived cost. If you truly disarmed the entire country (something I consider basically impossibl

This would cause so much chaos and probably result in thousands of divorces. Maybe we could get a lawyers group to front the money lol.

Visual effects artists and embedded programmers are very niche communities (former embedded SW engineer here). Probably something like 90% of people just need a browser 90% of the time. It's kind of a no brainer from a business point o

Do you mean face shield only? That seems like it would be much worse than mask only, if covid is airborne as the article suggests. Mask plus face shield should be even better than mask only.

There are plenty of positive traits that are associated with Masculinity: Bravery, Boldness, Self-Sufficiency, Discipline, Self-Assured, Skilled, Strong, etc. Of course this does not mean that these traits are somehow exclusive to or owned

Absolutely. Ublock origin is probably one of the highest impact products on my life. I would have a measurably worse time if it didn't exist or didn't work as well as it does. And it is free! The developer is a saint, and it just

Sidenote, he lists "Push over-the-air software updates to weapon systems (U-2) while flying the jet" in his list of accomplishments. Is this what it sounds like? It sounds like a terrible idea.

What will I do with the spare motherboard? It would likely be too hard to sell. I wonder if framework will sell you the chassis parts without a motherboard?

I don't think so. Maybe if I had said, "when they release a dvorak keyboard I'm in!" but preferring AMD is not a super user ask. There's also the issue of they missed the whole point of the product.

Uh, you missed the main feature of the device. Basically everything in the laptop is user replaceable. Even the motherboard can be swapped and presumably replaced with a newer model. The ports can be swapped too, so no more wishing you had

I guess I'm struggling to understand what the problem to solve here is (besides security bugs). Maybe that is wrong, and the idea is just to try new things. But seems to me that 'try new things' isn't a particularly stro

Interesting talk but I'm not convinced of the value proposition of "rediscovering hardware". The speaker points out that there are lots of small processors inside a modern SoC that are often running their own software hidden

You're saying Taiwan will essentially give up without a fight, which is laughable. If you think the Taiwanese and the Afghans were in similar situations, you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. If Taiwan were just a land b

Afghanistan is about as irrelevant of an example as I could think of in this case. I struggle to think of ways in which it is even remotely related. War is about supply chains. Even if (big if) you managed to land several tens of thousands

I've seen material saying the opposite. The buildup necessary to properly invade Taiwan would take several weeks at least, and would be impossible to hide. Taiwan would be as ready as they could be for an amphibious invasion. Amphibiou

Surviving rifle fire has been a solved problem since like, the bronze age. Add more metal. Getting to and landing on another planet (intact and functional) on the other hand, is probably like 3 orders of magnitude higher in difficulty.

You can have a big part of your energy generation come from renewables easily (as you pointed out). The hard/impossible part is making renewables the main or only source of power. That requires an insane amount of energy storage capaci

That is deflation and is intentionally avoided by central banks because you don't want people to hoard their money. Hoarded money sits there and does nothing while money that is in banks can be lent out, invested, and be useful.
