I hear you regarding Shuttleworth & Ubuntu. Unfortunately, the GNOME developers don't seem to want to play ball & have seen Unity as a rival to GNOME Shell rather than as complementary or something to build on.

It's been a while since I used it in anger, but I would have imagined that the latest release of Slackware is in relatively good shape. Patrick's emphasis on pragmatism & performance means that he simply wouldn't have incorporated stuff

Good point. The flipside of that is that such a distro is less suitable for production servers. That said, a savvy sysadmin would be picky about the filesystem to use in production anyway and could easily use a non-default filesystem.

A bunch of the other changes are about making CouchDB more suitable as a public-facing web server, hence the SSL support & improved ETag support for example.

I have JavaScript disabled by default, and selectively enable it for the sites where I feel it is worthwhile. I'm a longtime NoScript user, and these days I use NotScripts with Chrome.

Thanks for that, as a result I had a look at the GCC man page section re: Options Controlling C Dialect and also the one re: Options to Request or Suppress Warnings. Haven't done any real C coding in years, so it's good to know about those
