I use yash personally ( https://yash.osdn.jp/ ), but I'm not sure if that counts as 'alternative' since it's POSIX-compliant. It's small, interactivity-friendly, and POSIX compliant all at the same

Binary size doesn't quite work for the Plan 9 example because Plan 9's compilers are less optimizing than GCC/LLVM, leaving extra size that doesn't correspond to extra code complexity

If I recall correctly, QEMU did portable JIT by implementing the instructions in C and then copying their compiled versions out of the emulator binary instead of calling them as functions.
