Have you worked with more than 5 developers on a rails project? I ask because all the problems I've had with dick typing appear around interfaces between code from 2 programmers, and 5 seems to be the threshold where communication starts to

Google ngram explorer has the term 'first sleep' peaking in use in English Language circa 1870, before declining ~80% to present day. http://bit.ly/zt8AfD Tough to say if this was a 19th century phenomenon or was persistent through histor

Looks like they've got a pretty healthy base library set up, but I'd be curious if anyone's seen a thorough comparison of R and Incanter. Googling isn't much help.

Have interacted with both authors, however briefly. These are both smart guys operating outside of the typical CS fields who have figured out how to apply cutting edge computational techniques to their specialties and deliver meaningful ins

I'll chime in here as a member of a 'Data Science' team at an early stage company. A lot of this really resonated with me. In particular - I think several of his points are consequences of the others: 1) We sit on an island, quasi-separated

While I agree that a new education startup could go after something like the University of Phoenix, I'm not sure that Thrun and his crew are going for that. To me, the University of Phoenix represents a credential factory. People see that a

Fair enough - I've had some good experience pointing new R users to R in a Nutshell - but maybe Data Manipulation with R is better. Haven't used it and will take a look. One invaluable resource I forgot to point out was: http://www.statmet

Heavy R user here. When I was starting out, this: http://cran.r-project.org/doc/contrib/Short-refcard.pdf was a savior and goes well with this piece. As others have mentioned, getting into the useful data structures and libraries is the n

The "leave" portion of the protocol strikes me as unrealistic. Typically, when a node leaves a network it does so without warning and doesn't have tie to copy its data back. Maybe some level of redundancy will be discussed in the followup.

The latter half of the challenge was much more interesting to me. I'm a C/Python guy but didn't know the subtle language difference here. Additionally, in figuring out the difference, I learned that the C implementation takes almost the sam

RL Classic on iPhone 4S correctly scanned the code, but did not launch a browser. Tried on iPad 2 last night and safari didn't render it properly, anyway.

Doug McIlroy (inventor of pipes, original author of diff) was on my undergrad thesis committee. I think he would agree with Rob here. While the design of these additional features violates the "UNIX way," it doesn't violate pragmatism. Too

Could you go into more detail about the "insane" scoping/binding ideas? I've always found the environment model very straightforward and am wondering if I'm missing something.

I think both lines of code and number of files are terrible metrics to use to compare sizes of code base across three very different languages. I don't have any experience with Fortran, but as a seasoned R and C hacker, I don't think the tw

Love the headline, but the article doesn't do the tool justice. Have been using R off and on for the last 5 years or so, and very heavily for the last year. For data analysis tasks that fit in memory, it simply can't be beat. The functional
