Agreed. There are a ton of edge cases and auto instrumentation basically doesn't work. I love Honeycomb but the setup for DataDog is 100x easier

I have experience using this back when I worked for a startup that did distribution grid optimization. The specs are unfortunately useless in practice because while the terminology is standardized the actual use of each object and how to re

My point is that the app does that for free even from a distance. It’s simply website access that costs even though it should have 0 more marginal cost

Similar problems exist with the Nanit baby camera. It’s free to view the camera from the app but to view it from their website costs money. That being said if you know how to run docker you can just proxy the video feed to vlc pretty easily

The code archaeology was probably the most fun part for me but I had so much free time to do that because my projects were mostly maintenance as well

Some highlights that I remember include: * One project where the CI took something like 48 hours * Trying to apply waterfall hardware engineering processes to software development * Mostly hiring devs fresh from university so there was a to

Not surprising. I worked at NI for my first job out of university and developing software there was so painful

One thing that i think is clear from the responses here is that it’s going to be a long time before software engineering is like other engineering disciplines.

To me, the olympics are about determining who is best at a sport. It's not a technical problem like a car race where bending the rules with creative engineering is expected and encouraged.

Why not just have the Olympic host supply the same bike model to every participant rather than having each rider bring their own bike?

Similar problem for me. It seems like most folks near me do a lot of contesting which I have neither the time nor the interest to do.

Very cool project. Way back in the day I was on the team that built https://www.multisim.com/ so I've got some experience in EDA tool design. A couple of things that I noticed at first: 1. Placing components is rather

I would; it's a lot easier to use and reason about. that being said, it feels like we've come full circle back to the early 00s with form posts for submitting changes rather than fetch/xhr

At a previous job I helped build a hyper local method of computing spot prices to enable lots of cool ideas. We could compute unbalanced prices on the distribution grid and had a pilot project where DERs were priced based on how the influen

Early in my career I saw the aftermath of someone trying to deal with this problem. The solution they went with was to replace all allocations in the offending code with a custom allocator and then just throw the allocator away every so oft
