I think the best way is to seek out the advice of people familiar with what you're trying to do and learn from their past mistakes/take their thoughts on what is a good it bad idea very seriously. My main problem was that I was br

There's something like this as well in academia or at least science: because only successful studies get published (the file drawer problem), it's easy for someone who's read a lot of papers but not gotten their hands dirty y

Anyone else keep seeing articles about Mamba and thinking it's about Python/Conda? It's annoying when the new cool thing picks the same name as something else you like that deserves attention.

I believe Microsoft reused the Copilot brand that it acquired from GitHub for its AI assistant which is embedded in Windows, Bing, and apparently now Office. GitHub Copilot also still exists but is a different product.

> You just learn not to worry about it I don't know why but a lot of people my age do worry about it and get very uncomfortable guessing at a pronunciation of a new word. Doubly so for names. I guess it's an insecurity thing?

Yeah, I'm a native speaker and I still pronounce "awry" as "AH-ree" in my head sometimes. I think I saw it in print a lot before I heard it.

American young person here: I do the glottal stop thing with "button" but a flapped r with "butter." I think it has to do with the "n" - I would also do the glottal stop for "bitten" but not for "

FYI if you haven't heard of it, attrs ( https://www.attrs.org/en/stable/ ) is a package very similar to dataclasses that does support aromatically adding __slots__. I believe dataclasses was bases on it.

No, I'm fairly sure that was not their intent. It says at the bottom of the readme: NOTE: The sources and build scripts may be added after Unicode Version 14.0.0 has been released (2021), and as time and resources permit. So this repo

Anti-intellectual? I don't think it's meant to be taken seriously as a statement about science. It's just a bit of fun.

This must be the disconnect. As an Android user, it wouldn't occur to me that the "default" messaging app (usually something barebones and ugly) would influence how I send my messages. I just use whatever app I want, SMS or n

What, do you think that's too low? Sounds pretty normal for this type of study. Of course, that does mean the results don't necessarily generalize to the whole population, which is why you do eventually need much larger sample siz

As I understand it, if it's overfitting, testing on a second random sample gathered in the same way as the training set should degrade performance. That's not the case here. (Though maybe the term as used in industry is less stric

For me it more lays plain the inherent contradictions of (this version of) free will than directly disproves it. What would it mean if the conscious decision to do something came before any neural activity reflecting that? (Dualism!)

"Plasticity" basically means "learning" at a low level, so it's not really an explanation for why learning can be addicting.

I see a lot of criticism here saying things like "DNNs have nothing to to with brains, they weren't designed to work like brains, and any resemblance is surely just an artifact of training them to do brain-like things." The f

To be fair it is pretty confusing how Python and JS have two features that look very similar on the surface (dictionaries and objects) but actually work very differently. As someone who uses both languages infrequently, it trips me up.

MATLAB of all languages does this! Although as usual it's quirky about performance: the foo(bar) syntax (which used to be the only syntax) is faster.
