I didn't mean it as a dig at writers and directors, although going back and re-reading my post it certainly seems like it (my bad). I merely wanted to point out how large the number of stake-holders is for your average motion picture. One s

I think the tech community thinks the MPAA is much more monolithic than they actually are. The individual companies are not going to agree on what content to offer at what rates in a new high-speed market, so the MPAA is going to talk about

I could be wrong, but I think process for buying spectrum varies widely from country to country. I don't see Apple doing something like this if they can't do it globally. In other words, I would file this under "highly unlikely".

The folks over in Europe watch their 720p at 50fps, which is awfully close, but would still require pull-down for material shot at 48fps. I wouldn't expect any new home video standard formats any time soon. I think for viewers to see The Ho

I just took a quick look at the engineering page at jobs.netflix.com and over 3/4 of the postings have "senior" in the title. Maybe you should focus a little less on finding people who have already done the job you think you're looking for

I was about to suggest the "Bands in Town" API, linking to upcoming concerts based on the "influences" section on each page, but it looks like they're about to discontinue it. In that vein though, maybe let users link to recordings they hav

I'm a recording engineer, which increasingly means "data wrangler". A couple years ago I taught myself bash and then python in order to write a script to convert our archives from wav to mp3 (and inject metadata from a crystal reports file)

That is a very good point. Most top-tier orchestras have tenure for their permanent positions and it's not uncommon for musicians to stay 20-40 years. As a result, the consequences for a bad hire are extremely high. Many orchestras have the

My field (classical music) has a similar application screening problem (lots of applicants, very few good ones). Our chosen screening process, the audition, is imperfect for many of the same reasons given for why puzzle solving sometimes fa

I've been using Flask for my current project and I absolutely love it. The project is a web interface for our library's digital archives (mostly audio and video assets, but also images and print documents). Version 1 of the project used php

May 1 seems a little late to be issuing invitations for those of us who would need to be booking flights to make it out there. Any chance of a quicker yes or no if we send our info right away?

When I saw this headline on HN I thought to myself "Wow, Apple is finally implementing ReplayGain in iTunes and on iDevices?". Sadly this is not the case. It could do more for the quality of music on iTunes than any increases in bit depth o

If so, isn't it also extortion when people say "If Hollywood doesn't release their content the way I want them to (cheaper and without DRM), I'm going to continue to pirate it"?
