The idea that you can dream up architectures but not implement them and expect anything worthwhile to come out reeks of inexperience.

I have, but in this case it was truly necessary to do all the disgusting stuff like using Javascript to center stuff, because the content width had to be determined in hindsight. All suggestions in the article use features that came out in

If you look at any of the suggestions in the article, each uses at least one feature that came out in the late 2010s. Add a couple of years until initial bugs were fixed (which were there), and until browser adoption is high enough that old

I remember setting up rounded corner PNGs with IE compat shims because it couldn't handle transparency otherwise.. I also switched away from frontend dev because of this silliness eventually.

in my experience many of the people who wax poetic about just using tables and/or complain about how CSS is limiting and confusing...never actually put in much of an effort to learn how it works As somebody who was actually there bac

I wish they committed to implementing more of the POSIX standard instead. They only ever implemented an initial version, and then added tiny parts of it in incompatible ways.

That’s how games used to work. The “OS” was just some middleware library.

I don’t know, everyone but you seems to be able to have a civil discussion. All I can say as a white Polish immigrant in Germany is that I was hit by the “Nazi club” as it’s called here a hundred times in my lifetime. No matter how mild you

I think it at least depends on other factors as well. For example the German city of Düsseldorf is very welcome to Japanese business, and it resulted in a lot of infrastructure like Japanese schools, kindergardens, cultural institutions , J

Sorry, but I have to agree with him as a German. The discussion climate about such topics is really rough here due to the country’s history.

There isn’t really any ambiguity about the two terms. That’s a dog whistle by people who want to see racism where there is none. They usually say something along the lines of “so when black and brown skinned people go to Europe they’re immi

It’s disingenuous to claim people don’t understand OOP (a term which can mean multiple things) by referring only to one of its possible meanings. The performance comparison is also ridiculous. The counter points are some random comments by

What surprised me the most was that a bluetooth smartwatch reduced my 2.4GHz home wifi speed to kilobytes per second whenever I tried to connect it to my phone app. It’s absolute trash technology in practice and I just don’t use BT anymore

I can think of many counter examples, e.g auto v = MAX(a, b); where max infers the result type from the input types using generics or compiler intrinsics. auto v = (struct foo){.a = 1}; where one wouldn’t want to repeat the type as in C++ a

I wonder whether there’s a measurable performance difference if instead of calling delete two times he just used the second delete with “on delete cascade”?

I find the project and title very intriguing, but the presentation really turned me off. The script for the video is all over the place and most of it doesn’t have to do with the topic at hand.

I also really like this paradigm. It’s just that in old crusty null-terminated C style this is really awkward because the input data must be copied or modified. But it’s not an issue when using slices (length and pointer). Unfortunately mos

At that point the definition would be useless. It’s not the definition I’ve seen during my CS education, in papers and even what’s written about it on Wikipedia.
