I just updated knotend so that it now uses the hashmark. I think this is a great idea, and it just loses the ability to get the urls server side, which in my case is totally fine. I also updated the blog post and acknowledged your comment,

This is a great point, but also depends on what browsers you want to support. In my experience some browsers a) will truncate the url when you try to copy it from the browser bar (safari), and b) will not support any url including the hash

You're right, its a limitation. Knotend also supports upload/download of a .knotend file to get around this.

I want the user to be able to highlight some text and add a url to it, like you would with cmd-k in gdocs, sheets, etc. Not just linkifying any detected urls in the text.

To clarify — Id like this to feel like rich text editing. I just dont need all the other rich text editing features like colors, bold, lists, etc. I just want to support highlighting some text, cmd-k to add a url, click to edit the url, etc

Ok, I fixed this. You can now Tab (etc) while editing a node to add a new node.
