When far suburbs and exurbs have to pay their own way they often wind up not being able to. Those that don’t have an equivalent to California’s Prop 13 cap on property tax increases will have to raise property taxes substantially to continu

LCM's trouble was entirely caused by LCM not being completely spun off with an endowment prior to Paul Allen's untimely death and the inheritance of his estate by his sister Jody. Jody Allen doesn't care about LCM, so she &qu

Look which comments are being flagged and downvoted though. There's obviously some brigading happening by people who buy Jason Scott's story.

If you work in a field that’s built around intellectual property law, as any creative field including software is, it behooves you to be sufficiently familiar with it to understand that MTG’s tap mechanic was patented not covered by copyr

Or you dual-port the VRAM. Or you have a division between RAM banks managed by the OS, e.g. “slow” and “fast.” Or you have the custom chips mediate access to the VRAM entirely, but offer a DMA feature for, say, block transfers of bits. Or…

The reason they didn’t do a full 640×480 was because they were focused on TV-compatible video hardware, not because an 8MHz 68000 couldn’t handle it. Even without Commodore’s terrible corporate structure they would have had a rough time imp

Yeah. Every time a pundit, even an Apple-focused one, complains that macOS “hasn’t changed” I have to shake my head at such ignorance from people who should know better. The interface changes relatively slowly, all things considered. (Whe

They were not. The early Mac operating system and Toolbox were written in assembly, with a Pascal API . MacApp was ported to C++ in the late 1980s and went C++ only in the very early 1990s, about 1991-2 with MacApp 3. MacApp was the framew

I think it depends on what you mean by “last,” a star might “last” even longer than 5×10^12 years before the last component nucleons of its remnant evaporate. If you consider how long a star lasts to be how long it emits around the same amo

One great thing about this is that the Flash support isn’t a feature of the QuickTime container format—it’s just another type of track media! The container or overall structure didn’t have to change to accommodate it, it could just be add

To my knowledge, RIFF is comparable to the lowest levels of the QuickTime container format in that it’s made up of chunks with a tag and a size. Lots of file formats have done that back into the 1960s and probably even before, it’s one of t

The only significant rough edge in the QuickTime container format that I know if is the means for extending atom sizes and data offsets to 64 bits. Otherwise it’s extremely clean, especially given that it was designed almost 35 years ago.

Thanks! QuickTime’s not proprietary, it’s been well-documented and open since it was new and being 30+ years old there’s not a lot of encumbrance to worry about.

You say no one wants that, then you describe doing exactly that. If your “app” runs in a browser window—a window presented by a browser engine—it’s fundamentally a web page. (They’re two distinct words.)
