I was an international grad student in 2018-19 when there was a shutdown. It was fascinating. My wife was working in transportation consultancy and there was a sudden drop in the amount of work. The national parks were free to go in an out,

I have used Google products for free all my life. In last year or so I was forced to pay for two products - one is my wife's Google Fi phone and another is a friend's Google apps suite. Both of these are ticking time bombs. These

I have nothing against the Dutch but these two Dutch companies, Shell and Elsevier, are scourge of humanity.

Yes. What's the point of developing something that is suitable for sunny climate only? This is how bias creeps into Al/ML systems.

Phoenix gets like 300 days of sunny weather, Bay area also has historically mild climate. Why is almost no comments mentioning this?

We don't have any apple products actually. Three Lenovos and a Razer. My wife is still on WiFi most of the time and she hasn't experienced much issues. But my impression is that we always has 5G WiFi enabled. Still not sure actual

I might end up getting another router next time I move because of this.

Fun story: I work remotely for an org located in the Bay area. Few months ago I get a call early morning from the IT security person. Apparently someone had been trying to RDP into my work laptop, over a thousand attempts per day for last c

Funnily enough, my HN account is 12 years old and back then I was located in Bangladesh with no concrete plan to come to the US. The US-centric nature of HN (or Reddit, 8yr old account) never bothered me, rather it gave more context to thos

Absolutely. We were international students to the US, so we waited for a long time trying to sort out our future before having a baby- studies, immigration, employment among other things.

You're right, there are nearby playgrounds. As the other comments put it, it is more about the walkability/design of the neighborhoods that's the issue.

I have an optimistic, almost desperate take on this. The AI generated content will scale and proliferate so much that it will put a premium on verified, curated human-generated content. Initially I was a ChatGPT skeptic. Then I started usin

I bookmarked a lot of tweets over the years featuring papers in my research area. Last time I was doing a literature review I found most of them do not exist anymore. Which is sad.. I should've bookmarked the DOIs instead of the tweets

One of my colleagues at my previous lab is porting multiple Matlab toolboxes to Python. These would probably require months for couple of Master's students, but with ChatGPT it is a few weeks work for a postdoc.
