Wait, why is that sexist? A proposition that mixed-gender groups behaved differently than homogeneous groups doesn't ring any alarm bells for me.

You're inferring something that wasn't intended. Your peace-treaty example was exactly the type of situation my analogy was referring to. Patents are being used aggressively because that's the nature of competition—if anyone is going to use

Yep, I was referring to the fallacy. I know people don't always make rational decisions—and there are many other considerations here besides—but I thought it worth pointing out that it's not quite so obvious that the large companies would

They already purchased those patents, though. It's kind of a sunk cost. They wouldn't be losing $4.5 billion cash if patents became worthless, they'd be losing ammunition for a type of fight that they wouldn't have to deal with anymore. Tha

I noticed it when they miscounted, and it was kind of interesting how it happened. The professor talked through a revolution, and then resumed counting from his previous number. The student who was counting in the background just sort of re

In the meantime, I've been using the SIMBL plugin MegaZoomer: http://ianhenderson.org/megazoomer.html It works quite well with Terminal.

Driving on an iced lake or any other condition where your car is more likely to become submerged than you are to run into something, being unable to exit the vehicle quickly can be fatal.

I've noticed that I'm actually getting more out of the hidden-karma comments because I am not able to skim as easily. I'm also not forming preconceived notions of a comment's quality before I read it, which is activating the critical-thin

Sam Hughes had an interesting perspective on this: http://qntm.org/number Basically, meaningful numbers are so sparse that to claim there's nothing special about them is ridiculous.

You're misunderstanding the Peter Principle. It's not about promoting incompetent people, it's the phenomenon of promoting competent people into positions where they're no longer as competent.

I don't mean to add to the noise floor, but is there a reason you generated a bit.ly link for this? This isn't twitter with particularly restrictive character constraints; all it serves is obfuscation as far as I can tell. I'm genuinely cur

You're making a lot of claims without citations. flyosity's absolutely correct to question them, and if you're serious about what you say, then yes, you are obligated to back them up in some way.

For some reason this made me think of Google and how they encourage movement between teams and projects. It seems to me that's probably a good way to keep highly skilled employees riding the wave of that 'value apex', rather than just crest

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you had hardcoded the addresses, only that you'll have to go through the process of finding the addresses anew for each build. Not an insurmountable problem (as you've shown), but making it slightly harder

I'd completely missed the reusability aspect of things; I guess because the tight coupling to specific addresses would mean redoing a lot of the work for different builds. But once you figure it out, it looks like it could be trivial to rep

I understood that not recompiling was the point; I was wondering why it was a valid point. "Because you want to do it to a running production app" seems far-fetched to me -- not saying that it is, I had just discounted that reasoning. tbr

Why not just add tracing code to the source and recompile? I don't immediately see an advantage to this kind of hot-patching in this case.

You have to buy a unicode keyboard. They have over 95000 keys and take up about nine square meters. Hope you have a big desk. (Sorry, I couldn't resist)
