They’re welfare states, with three classes of residents. A slave-like underclass, disenfranchised expats, and citizens who get paid off by their royal families with generous benefits. Maybe the closest analogy is Ancient Rome?

I remember watching hours of TV as a child in the 80s. I remember my cousins, born in the 90s staring like zombies at Cartoon Network when they were toddlers. We're all reasonably functional adults (most high achievers academically, an

I had the same feeling reading this, but a large number of developers struggle to communicate verbally and would hate a chat based interface. Some years ago, I worked with a very intelligent person who had come into development with math-re

I haven’t bothered with o3 mini, because who wants an “inferior” product? I was using 4o as a “smarter Google” until DeepSeek appeared (although its web search is being hammered now and I’m just using Google ). o1 seems to have been neutere

ChatGPT Plus gives me a limited number of o1 calls and o1 doesn't have web access, so I mostly have been using 4o in the last month and supplementing it with DeepSeek in the last week, for when I need advanced reasoning (with web searc

I had a couple of the most capable senior developers reach out to me to tell me how Github Copilot accelerated their productivity, which surprised me initially. So I think there's something to it.

I think the problem is a bit harder than that. I've seen a lot of managers who were once technical, but whose last hands-on experience was years, or decades ago. They have a vague idea of what they need to know/do but lack the ski

OT: I like how he refers to a Hanselman post about great interview questions, and how around 40% of the questions in that post are obsolete. It shows how quickly our field evolves, for better or worse.

There was plenty of cynicism in tech back then too, plenty of posters who always complained about 'micro$oft'. I think the anti-Microsoft sentiment (outside of some internet forums, and justified IE6 hate) had been dialled back

Compulsory voting means that a large part of the electorate that doesn’t pay attention to politics is easily frightened by scare campaigns. An example of this is that Australia is sorely in need of tax reform, but any party that pushes for

Even then, most of these coding tools aren't even close to automating meaningful coding tasks in practice, and while that doesn't mean they can't in the future, it's a long ways off! Not related to your main point, but

I think the introduction of WFH during the pandemic hurt a lot of IT workers in the long-run. In the interests of “fairness” they are being ordered back to the office post-Covid even when their work processes mean they can be done perfectl
