Make is actually good. I used to try and avoid it. Many have tried to make something better and its always more complex than make and probably slower.

Great post. Hadn't heard of JOSS - enjoyed reading the Wikipedia article. > The terminals used green ink for user input and black for the computer's response. Any command that was not understood elicited the response Eh? or SOR

The obvious answer is revenue. Most of tech is left. The more outrage the more clicks. I don't think people realize how desperate these news orgs are.

This is crazy entitlement. Three months salary in a tech job is more than most people make in a year. If you are moving overseas, maybe wait before selling all your stuff until you pass probation. This idea that you should be guaranteed t

I don't think people realize that when you have a huge commodity income stream under threat of ceasing to exist, it's quite realistic to spend a huge percentage of this on lobbying to stretch it as far as it will go.

I always thought this too. Just googled "how many nuclear reactors for all worlds energy needs". First result: "Why nuclear power will never supply the world's energy needs" [1]. Global energy needs at 15TW. Would n

Time and motivation is the main thing. As you are older you simply have less free time. You also usually have less to prove too which eats into your motivation.

I think a problem with not drinking is people think 1. you are no fun 2. you have a problem. So sometimes I find I will even have a drink because I don't want people to speculate on me having a problem.

Aren't you worried about side effects and addiction? Say you find some really bad side-effect in the future, can you live a normal life without it, and then you have to think how has your mind changed since getting used to the drug com

Well said. There are a million starter projects and examples each with a different mix of tools hooked up all in very different ways with tons of files and config. And lots of them with bugs or out of date. The problem with the JS world is

A big problem is for anything to be successful it had to be similar enough to the last thing. E.g. all the new frameworks that look and feel like React. Every new thing is constrained and sticky taped onto the older thing. So no one can eve

It’s crazy and impressive how we devs created this fucking huge industry where hundreds of millions was spent to solve a problem that didn’t really exist and actually made things harder and more expensive.

I was thinking the same thing recently. I’ve finally realized that React is painful and overly complex. I just followed the crowd and got too deep. Backbone was elegant and simple. I could step through all the code being executed with my de

Employees can become managers. This class divide is so much less relevant today than it was due to startup culture. Funding is not that hard to come by.

What has a union got to do with „give devs a seat at the table“? By „seat at the table“ you mean a way to get what they want by force or against the will of the owners. You don’t need a union to collect employee feedback. Smart management w

Agree but tech is not like this. Especially with the rise of remote work. Unions can also hold down wages by reducing flexibility in conditions to suit different employees preferences.
