Is there actually a formal language semantics definition anywhere? I thought all we had was stuff like https://doc.rust-lang.org/reference/index.html which is explicitly listed as "not a formal spec".

AFAIK there is no prescriptive standard for Rust, there's only descriptions of how the rustc compiler works. But this was a very intentional decision quite some time ago, and is also the reason why the `std::ptr::NonNull` type exists (

Something I've never seen JIT proponents talk about is the cost of maintaining all of the information necessary to make smart specialization decisions, both in terms of storage space and in the execution overhead of updating that info.

I didn't say it was universal, but it's extremely widespread, and more importantly, it's widespread among a diverse set of languages that don't share a common root. Incidentally, the Wikipedia page for "Mama and pap

Tell that to the kids who died playing in unsafe conditions. One can certainly argue that we've gone too far in the direction of removing all risk of injury. But saving lives? Absolutely the right thing to do! One preventable death i

If you don't want the borrow checker, why are you even using Rust? The borrow checker is the foundation of the zero-cost safety guarantees that make Rust such an incredible language to work with.

What are these "gobs of languages"? I know there are a few, but the sounds there are generally still things that are really easy for babies to say. What's interesting about "mama" is that it's the same (or very

I think "ma" generally comes first in baby's lexicon, and historically the gestational parent has been the primary caretaker (and the gestational parent in most cases has the identity "mother"), so it's no surp

Neither of those match the rather unsurprising answer I've heard before, which is that "mama" and "papa" are two of the simplest sounds babies can make and therefore two of the sounds babies are most likely to start

Ok "reelection" is the wrong term, but if anything this is worse, because if judges can have multiple terms then it means they're beholden to the current president when their term ends and therefore will be heavily swayed by

The problem with the "monopolizing a market" idea is the fact that "Apple devices" is not a meaningful market, and within the actual "smartphone" market Apple very clearly does not have a monopoly.

I don't understand this argument though. Surely if both app customers and app developers sued Apple they'd be suing over the exact same damages? Either customers have their prices artificially increased, at which point app develop

6 years is awfully short for this sort of thing. What we absolutely need to avoid is having justices have to care about reelection, which means we need to say justices can only ever serve one term, which means we need longer terms.

I've never done Windows programming but AFAICT you don't use `int main()` on Win32 anyway, you write something like int WINAPI WinMain(HINSTANCE hInst, HINSTANCE hPrevInst, LPSTR, int) (where WINAPI is just a macro for __st
