Sure, in which case, you can do what many New Yorkers who rent do - put in a window unit.

There was a good book recently that described Europe as an open air museum. I honestly don’t know why you all put up with that nonsense. Is your country for the living, or the dead?

Our mini split cost $3k, and it was on the relatively expensive end of options, there were many <$1k.

I’ve installed them myself, there’s not a whole lot more to it. Even easier if you have double hung windows to mount one on, though my understanding is that they’re not that common in Europe.

Absolutely. In the northeast US we have triple redundancy on heat, because it’s potentially life-threatening to have the heat go out in a blizzard with subzero temps. I’d treat cooling redundancy as similarly important in Nevada, especially

> "just turn on the AC and keep burning the world down" isn't really the answer. This is an outdated attitude. PV solar panel output correlates really well with air conditioning demand, no need for storage. Overcool your t

Half of my point was to test the models, the other half was to try to get a sense of what the speed would be. Hard to do, but dropping $5k on a 128 gig machine thinking that will unlock good local AI and then realizing that you’ll need to s

You probably want to try renting some time on a dedicated box with roughly the specs you’re considering and running the open models for a bit to see if you would actually use them before dropping a lot on local hardware. A 128 gig MacBook P

I’m still on DSM 6, and just added a new unapproved drive, and it was just a click through warning. Is it much worse on the newer DSM versions? EDIT oof yeah that’s pretty horrible, I take back my Synology recc. Looks like it’s partly model

The drives are the expensive part, though - 16x24TB HDDs adds another $11k. (Not that you need that much for canceling streaming, I’d get a home Synology or diy TrueNAS for that anyway)

Ah yeah, I heard about that, I think we have the older edition. I think it's fine to just stop and provide some parental commentary about it - it can be a good forcing function for talking about that stuff. Hopefully they didn't t

Yeah, our boys read my old C&H collection more than almost any of their modern kids books. Downside, it's inspired all sorts of mischievous ideas. Roald Dahl, too, and the Uncle series. These old books have more of an edge to them

Yeah fair, we're all a bit overloaded, would be nice if that was just taken care of. I've been idly thinking about what sorts of tools might help with this stuff. Like, CR has really good data, but it's also one of the least

Heh I just mean that it's usually not that hard once you learn how to look, and if you care. In some categories, I agree, can be tough, but there usually tends to be at least one old stodgy brand that refuses to cheap out, and usuall

Ok, still over 100k not including those temporary jobs. I’m not arguing that the overall picture is amazing, just that it doesn’t seem like the narrative that AI is causing massive net job loss is true yet.

Payrolls are up about 214k in March, 180k in April, and 140k in May. The BLS data is from broad monthly surveys, not people showing up in workforce centers.

It's not forced on you. If you do a minimal amount of research (which LLMs are very helpful with!), you can still find durable stuff. A Speed Queen washer is still built like a tank. It's just that the less durable stuff is absur
