As it's become easier and more lucrative, you see more people crowding in to becoming a realtor, and they spend more of their time competing for clients rather than doing productive work for those clients.

The thing is, antique stores are stuffed to the gills with heirloom class furniture, and it doesn’t cost 100x the amount. Gorgeous solid cherry, mahogany, etc, where even the backs and drawer bottoms are solid can be had for a song. We rece

I’d add that it has a huge decentralized network of purpose-built hardware securing it, and a huge swarm of decentralized nodes enforcing its rules, and making it hard for a small group of people to change its rules. That’s worth something,

For another data point, we bought 19 kW of new panels from SignatureSolar for $6k shipped in the US not too long ago, so a bit more than 0.30/watt. Not top of the line efficiency at 20%, but high quality all-black monocrystalline Canad

If you look at the graph of different countries' birth rates, it looks like the US rate declined rapidly in the years following 2008 (it was a local maximum before that). US birth rate also had trouble during the 70s energy crisis. So

The nitrite is probably the most objectionable part? Linked to colon/stomach cancer iirc. My non-expert impression is that there’s a growing body of research that suggests that preservatives generally aren’t great for your gut microbio

Is there any reason for this to be less heavily regulated than fission plants/waste? Seems like that’s the major driver of cost? Are ridiculously massive containment vessels less necessary, since it’s very off by default/without p

It’s both much harder and more expensive to become a doctor than a lawyer. And usually I’m paying my lawyer to protect me from risks to my financial health, not because I think checking with them will make me money. My doctor helps protect

A 15 minute email from my lawyer costs about $150, I don’t see why we should be outraged about $25? It’s much harder and more expensive to become a doctor.

This is the best news I’ve seen all month. I think one of the great near-term dangers of AI is the bulk of the economic benefit going mainly to relatively few companies. That risk seems substantially reduced if they have to compete with a g

I doubt it, Jeremy’s been walking the walk for quite a while now, when it comes to opening up access to AI, especially with his excellent, free fast.ai course, it seems pretty clear that his primary motivations are in helping others. (If yo

Right, you can just wrap it into the cost. I'm not sure, I'm not an expert in this, but my impression is that permitting and labor are a really big portion of the cost in the US, rather than eg panels being the driving cost. There
