Personally I think it’s still worth it at that price, even if the project would’ve been better done in the way I described. It’s better than the alternative. If we don’t spend $77b on rail we’ll still have to spend it expanding freeways and

$77B is outrageous. We have to fix infrastructure costs in this country. California would be better establishing an agency that progressively acquires, upgrades, and runs rail throughout the state as a single integrated system. We've b

How can there both be a shortage and low pay? Shouldn't the need for pilots drive up pay as demand for air travel itself isn't going down.

Unfortunately the Principal title has been abused and cheapened by some orgs. In some ways necessarily, as comps in tech have grown it’s become necessary to hire people at a Principal level in order to get the necessary comp. In other orgs

I don’t think people are making a value judgement that parents shouldn’t have the ability to spend more time with their children, just that for the USA (and for that matter most western countries to boot), this is still a very generous offe

To be somewhat fair this is still an amazing benefit: “It’s now capping parental leaves at six months and giving parents a taxable $20,000 stipend to defray the costs of childcare.” In the context that they are doing this while few other

You seem to be thinking about something different wrt cost sharing and public healthcare. Cost sharing structure is a separate matter to risk pooling. Taken to its conclusion we should all be in risk pools of 1.

I would like to see the increasing granulization of insurance put to an end, because otherwise it won’t stop. There should be one pool, everyone’s in it, we spread risk, and the whole damn thing is simpler and easier to regulate. Sure, Mr B

It’s not as unusual as you might think. Random failures can cluster. It’s why two paths is never enough if redundancy matters.

Anonymous submissions are in theory somewhat feasible, albeit cumbersome. You can by the 23andme kits with the full fee paid from certain pharmacies (I think Target had them) using cash. This means you don't have to put down a credit c

Not certain but there are two advantages of using a trie in this case, 1) you don’t have to hash the IP address (that takes time too, and is for every packet remember), and 2) you can easily represent whole IP subnets in a trie as one node

Better to say the fair price is 10-50% of the chargemaster. But if you’re not an insurance company and the hospital refuses to negotiate it down then that is the price you face. (Source: we were billed $16,666.30 for 30g of IVIG after bei

Doesn’t your argument also suggest using a 1-strike rule? I think it also calls for looking at why recidivism rates are so high, and what can be done to lower them. If we can lower recidivism rates after the first crime then the benefits wo
