My impression is that it's more similar to Litecoin in a technical sense since it is based on scrypt rather than sha256.

Unsurprising if true. Out of several hundred friends, I'm down to perhaps 10 that post to Facebook on a regular basis, and they'd probably be better served by moving their activities to Twitter.

Generally when HN cheers someone skirting regulations, it's because the person/company is doing so to produce something of value rather than to avoid having to work.

They worked in Chrome Canary for me. The pictures did not load correctly, but the actual maps that are linked to worked.

I don't think that installing 3rd party software to fix core UI issues is trivial. I think that something like that would never occur to the vast majority of Windows users.

I'm sure no Yale student has ever heard of tethering and that blocking the site on the Yale network will effectively prevent very smart students from reaching this website. You would think that the Yale administrators would know better

It's heavily dependent on the city you're in as far as I can tell. Google Maps is awful in Madison, but I've had better results with it in Atlanta.

Hmmm. So the benefit of this is offloading plugin processing onto a separate thread(s)? I guess I see the theoretical benefit of that, but I'm unsure of how useful this actually is...

Interesting. In FF29, there's no perceptible difference.

Using a color besides grey on white would be nice. The lack of contrast makes some of the effects really difficult to see, especially the Speech Bubble ones.

Yep. $400 on a $5000 machine? For me, that'd easily be covered by the case, acoustics, and ability to use OSX. Not to mention the knowledge that I've got warranty on the full machine, not just on each individual part. My custom-bu

Back on iOS 2 (or 1 or 3 maybe), there was a browser-based jailbreak that exploited a flaw in the iOS PDF viewer, so there's definitely precedent for such a thing. http://www.jailbreakme.com/#

I remember reading that story. IIRC, the bug was was that long running jobs would fail. They eventually traced it to electrical interference generated by a loose floor panel that would move when the user paced over it. Also can't find

Wow, those providers need to lose their jobs. Performing a surgical procedure without getting consent from the patient in a non-life threatening situation? Seriously messed up.

Yep. I was pretty dumbfounded by how much less functional it was in Lion. I basically went from using Spaces constantly to probably not having used it in the past 2 years. I ended up completely replacing it with a bunch of keyboard and gest

That's been the case for the last few releases. When Lion came out, a lot of major apps dropped support for Snow Leopard within a year. I stuck around on SL for a while because I preferred (and still prefer) the way that it handled Spa

An interesting guess would be that they're going to repurpose the generic iPad name for something beefier like the Surface. In that case, the iPad Air would sort of be the lighter portable version similar to the Macbook Pro/Macboo

Yep, lighter faster version. Realistically, they probably realized that people want to be able to tell what version it is from the name. The previous two iterations were just the "new iPad".

That graph seems pretty clear to me. If anything, the way it's tilted maybe makes the Apple segment look a few percent larger than reality, but certainly not enough to get upset about. Not to mention that they clearly label the segment

It's interesting that they chose to release this with FF 23. In a few weeks, FF 24 will be out which is an ESR. Seems like that would be an easier path to take for something like this since they'd have to deal with a major update
