Anecdotal data point from Germany. SMS is still 9ct per message if you don't pay for a package with included text messages, MMS is around 39ct/300kb, and as far as I know there are no (and have never been at any price point) packa

Excellent point, by the way. Under GDPR, embedding something like a Google font is only legal after user consent, simply because they can see your IP address when you connect. This was confirmed again on Monday by a German court [1] (German

We also use it for fitting charged particle tracks in high energy physics experiments. Here, we’re iteratively incorporating measurements along the trajectory, finally arriving at basically a least squares fit result, after a backward smoot

It’s probably just me, but I found Neuromancer extremely hard to read. I forced myself to do it because the world building was so great, but I didn’t enjoy it a lot. I tried to do the same for The peripheral, but just couldn’t. Not for me

Mozilla was doing exactly this with their Firefox redesign and everyone on HN hated it because stuff was different. I think the problem is everyone on here hates it when stuff they use changes and that’s all.

We don’t know a ton about dark matter. Basically (and I’m simplifying a bit) you need CP violation (and more than is explained by the standard model) to account for the asymmetry. If your dark matter model of choice can generate CP asymmetr

I’d love it if they could stop trying to assign these results to individual institutes (Oxford in this case). This is an LHCb publication and that’s that c

You mean you find it ridiculous that you need extra software to make macOS input bad?

I switched back to Firefox specifically because of the new tab bar design. I hope Mozilla don’t walk it back because of HN outrage.

Hadrons are composite particles so that’s exactly what this is. Different quark combinations. Back in the day people didn’t know and we’re quite unhappy with such a Zoo of particles.

Kaiman filtering is frequently used in high energy physics particle tracking. For inhomogeneous magnetic fields, the transport isn’t linear though, so we pair it with 4th order Runge-Kutta for state and covariant propagation. Works pretty w

Might be wrong here, but isn’t that also a limitation for most component column based ECS implementations? (I mean each entity can have only one instance of each component)

They’re used by heavily by CERN to archive the LHC data. In ATLAS, we actually have to go back and reprocess that old data sometimes. So there’s dedicated software that runs on the grid to stage petabytes worth of data back onto hard drives

I’ve never been able to use rq with redis without problems. For one: restarting the app requires wiping the related redis data because rq will refuse to launch because there’s still entries for the workers, which it apparently doesn’t clean

Actually, curses uses two buffers and diffs them so that only the delta is sent „over the wire“. In graphics, everything is redrawn every frame usually.

Really depends I guess. I can tell you that at least for HEP, especially for the LHC experiments, software is nothing like what you describe. Parts are designed and optimized in such a way but I would imagine it it to be a gigantic effort t

We can infer specific properties of the virtual particles. Mass, spin, charge among others, depending on what we’re talking about. If those properties match up with expectation, we consider this strong support of the theoretical formalism.

What you’re claiming to make “no sense” is working right now in France and Germany, among others. Your convenience is not more important than other people’s lives.

Right, I would think you can measure success by number of years without widespread support for fascism. So far, we seem to be on track.
