Mailing lists are a way to collect high volume discussions on a topic in a way that can be quickly scanned and searched. I can route everything through GMail or other mail client, then use a single set of tools to manage my conversations an

Running the general number field sieve is not exactly brute forcing. IMHO, understanding and tuning an algorithm as complicated as the GNFS is pretty close to rocket science. Not as close as actually inventing it or writing the code yoursel

I'm on WiMAX right now with Clearwire, in Redmond WA. Works like a charm. The box could use a built-in 802.11 AP (or maybe it has one?) but that's easy enough to fix. speedtest.net says 42ms ping, 1.19MB/sec download, 0.19MB/sec upload to t

Do you already have a phone? Sounds like you do, just checking. If you walk into a T-Mobile or an AT&T Wireless store with a phone in hand, the salesperson can work with you. I recently checked this out for a development (unsimlocked) G

Yes, this is funny. The existence of random paper generators for a discipline doesn't say much about the rigor of that discipline. You might be able to make some kind of argument based on how long it takes for someone trained in the discipl

Right. I don't even take my laptop to DEF CON any more. Besides no longer needing to worry about the wifi, it means I spend more time talking with people. These days, though, you also need to keep an eye on your phone...

There are a few places I've seen that try to formally bring in "smart people who didn't get a CS degree." Microsoft has or had an "apprentice program" aimed at smart people who never happened to pick up a CS degree. There's a little bit abo

Worth it for meeting people. The talks are uneven. Sometimes wildly uneven. The main point of DEF CON is for people to get in touch face to face, maybe pick up some new interesting contacts. If you want "training" then this is not really th
