I’m careful with my iPhones (which mostly means not throwing them around and setting them face down on flat surfaces) and have never put them in cases. No problem.

That is not the same thing as patina, which is a real but different thing.

Very cool project, but this article isn’t really about complexity, and complexity makes a background appearance at best.

Mentioning their background is not necessarily an appeal to authority fallacy. It’s just metadata.

Something is getting lost in translation here, because scientists are not literally "debating" whether viruses are alive. Scientists "discuss" the boundary between alive and not, which is an interesting question because

That would be great if more than 0.2% of the population had a vague idea of how to access the legal system.

I agree with this. I think a lot of the criticism of string theory ignores the fact that a lot of ideas have merit simply because they make you see things from a different angle. Even if they don't replace other models, these sorts of

I think you'd rewire your brain "equally well" with either Haskell or Clojure. I prefer Haskell's type system, but Clojure has better syntax IMO.

> Recursion is sometimes the easiest way to reason about a problem though Yes, it's one of the things that allow FP algorithms to be more declarative. It's difficult to seriously argue that recursion is fundamentally more compl

There's a strong argument to be made that mathematicians tend to build the simplest abstractions conceptually, especially in comparison to computer scientists. Personally, when I stumble upon some maths, I pay close attention. It has p

For the same reason people can't change their well-established habits and opinions, particularly those that have network effects. Language popularity has little to do with how well languages are designed or how simple they actually are

Doing Clojure at CircleCI, a few years ago, redefined who I was as an engineer… FWIW. It’s an incredible language. Today I work with python (sigh) and every day I long for Clojure.

I think a big part of the problem is that people tend to see things in black and white (or rather, fail to account for nuance). Elon is a massively intelligent and business savvy guy with strong engineering talent. He is also unhinged and a

Where did you hear that? Elon was CEO long before the Model 3 existed. Before Elon was CEO, they weren’t delivering any cars at all.

I find it difficult to buy the argument that “it’s not difficult because of the math”, at least in the way the author meant. I do however literally agree with the author: ML is not difficult because of the math. It’s difficult because for s

No, it’s not the same thing as “being full of shit”. You took a nuance and you turned it into a carnival. The incentive structures you hint at don’t make sense either.
