Great reference to "Eternal September" - didn't know about that. I can now think of many examples of this happening to online communities.

I agree. ffmpeg can be inscrutable sometimes. Understanding the internal concepts is a big boost when using it. For example I've used "-avcodec" hundreds of times in the command line but I just now understood where that fit i

So this is exactly how I got started on a silly Ethereum side project over the holiday. Truffle, solidity docs, and reading the crypto kiddies code is all you need. I'm mostly interested in how Ethereum and other blockchain technologie

I found this book fascinating but after a while it just started to feel like a review of psychology research and a list of example after example and it eventually became boring and I didn’t finish it. I also think more recent research has c

I'm not sure it's important to debate whether software itself is _good_ or _bad_. It just is; a means to an end. We should of course debate whether the applications we build are good or bad. Many on this site consider Facebook to

The bailout was necessary but a tough pill to swallow. My understanding is that there was really no good way to provide direct relief to citizens. AIG and others failing posed a systematic risk and the most effective way to stabilize the ec

Great anecdote. I try to apply this philosophy to endurance training like running (just get to the next mile marker), swimming (just do the next lap) or biking (just do another minute) but it's really hard. I'm awed by the special

Thanks for the link. I thought these things involved a lot of markov models and gaussian functions but this is mostly just some pretty slick engineering. The 1000x search speed seems very good.

I don’t see why this is such a big deal. It’s like saying Intel spent $3B to make development boards for their next gen chip but instead of replacing the chips on those dev boards they just bought new production boards. I can easily see how

I don't know about the quantums but to detect the waves you basically split a laser beam using mirrors and redirect each split to a detector. When the wave hits it stretches each split in the beam slightly which causes an interference

This is so cool because we used our ears (the LIGO detectors) to hear/feel the gravitational wave hit then used our eyes (electromagnetic radiation telescopes) to focus in on where we thought we felt the ripple. And what's more, m

Does anyone know anything more about these “capsules”? I’ve seen some nature articles on them but these were from a neuroscience perspective. Has Hinton published anything on them? Also if Hinton is the Einstein of deep learning, then will

Ah, slow startups on unittests is a big headache. This is especially apparent on big projects like Django where you might as well leave your desk and grab coffee when the unittests start, even for small projects. That said, I can't hel
