That seems to be the case in Oracle Java at least. With 80+ GB heaps, you can experience multi-minute stop-the-world collections when a full GC strikes. Luckily, that can be tuned to be very rare ( for the usual load ). For better latency w

I think the Nexus phones are just developer phones: They're as performant as the other mid-range offerings and get the updates early. Being as performant helps Android ecosystem by making the developers to develop apps that work well a

Could you perhaps expand a bit on what could be done on GC on non-procedural languages? I am suspecting that you mean that there are some tricks that could be employed by functional programming language runtimes. Hotspot GC is not the best

I'd think that JVM JIT and GC count as technical advantages.

For static import you would need to do import static java.lang.Math.*; The current version would just import all the classes defined in package java.lang.Math (which does not exist, but java.math does).

No. The scenario you posit would be true if JavaScript were call-by-reference. JavaScript, however, is call-by-value. Primitive types (string, number, boolean) are passed to functions by copying their value, and reference types (such as any

It seems that the standard behind that was first published in 1998 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEED ) whereas crypto export restrictions were lifted only 2000. Before the export restrictions, browsers outside the US were restricted to 40

You can get such functionality in Oracle's JVM by using the command line option -XX:+UseGCOverheadLimit. This will cause OOM-exception to be thrown when at least 98% of program time is used in garbage collection and at most 2% of the total

Maybe it's just that they don't want that one page cached as they may update their scripts, images and stylesheets. And for that css-file, I think that whenever they change the css, they'll just give the resource a new address so cache is o

When dependencies are shown on the rim of the circle, most of the area is used by the circle. You might want to try to do some automatic force-based layouting instead for the most dependent-on packages would be easier to see.

At least for me there's no such choice as delete in the System Roots keychain. The only thing I can do is to set it to "never trust" and still Chrome/Safari show it as trusted: http://imgur.com/NcUYf

My understanding is that Ruby GC just runs through its heap of Ruby objects and sees which of them are reachable based on other objects in the Ruby heap and C-stack/registers. Faulty assumption seems to be that counting references only to R

I think the current way to write that is to either use Google Guave ImmutableMap.of("a", 1, "b", 2, "c", 3) or when mutable maps are required, to write: Map m = new HashMap() {{ put("a", 1); put("b", 2); put("c", 3); }}; Both of these are a

Yeah, the JVM is written in C++ but the problem is in Oracle's JDK written in Java. More specifically, line 1596 in FloatingDecimal.java ( http://www.docjar.com/html/api/sun/misc/FloatingDecimal.java... ) is the only place in the correction

I can think of two reasons getting emotionally attached to the tools: learning the tool, be it Java or Ruby, requires considerably more thought than learning to use a screwdriver and using the tool shapes the way problems and solutions look
