I tried zoneminder in earnest and was severely disappointed. I've been running Ubiquity Video in a container on my local server, which is pretty great as a simple NVR, but _only_ works with their cameras, which won't work for me.

I just went through this as well. I found a used HTD Lync 12 (12-zone multi-channel amp) on craigslist for a steal from a person who never had the time to set it up. I was notified of it about a year after I created the search notificatio

I used to agree that Facebook was superior, but I don't anymore. Myspace allowed people to far better express themselves with design and music. It was a shit show, but so are we.

I agree, and I've found that WebStorm (and other JetBrains software with JavaScript support) does a great job at it, although I do find TypeScript improves the experience.

Here's a fun trick Comcast is now playing with in Chicago. For unlimited data, it costs $50 a month if you're using your own modem, but using Comcast's modem, I get a "discounted" rate of $20 a month including the

Seattle's roads were most definitely not built for the amount of traffic they see. I remember watching from my porch as cars spent an hour inching their way through the mile to the 99 when I was living in Lower Queen Anne. This was f

Funny, I was about to make a comment about Wrigleyville and you nailed it. We now habitually check if there's a game or concert before visiting my cousin in the neighborhood. A few years back I lived 3 blocks away from Wrigley Field.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. I bought a house with a front porch, and for three seasons of the year my wife and I sit out there almost every day. It's mind-blowing to me how few of our neighbors sit in front of their houses. Th

I'm pretty late to this party, but I've been using rsyslog and "EK" (skip the L - it's way too slow and resource hungry). rsyslog / syslog-ng handles shipping logs to a central server and it's dead simple

Amazon had been a default for me for a long time, but the knock-offs have gone so far overboard that I consider it about a 60/40 that I'll get the actual product I ordered from the actual manufacturer I thought I was buying from.

I absolutely agree with your second paragraph. For the rest, I'd recommend you spend a half year working in the service industry for half minimum wage plus tips before throwing around phrases like "zero-skill".
