Doesn't it make sense that the website loads quicker when you're not logged in? Not only will the caches be hit more frequently, but the queries are likely simpler than having to include lookups to see which articles on that page you've alr

Thank you, I have turned this option on to try it out. I do have an immediate question though: what does it mean if a thread on Recent, for example, is marked as dead?

The crucial detail is that the author didn't know he was hellbanned, so he didn't know to look into it.

Can't some users see hellbanned comments? I frequently see comments telling someone that they've been hellbanned, and although I don't fully understand it all, I'm surprised that you have been hellbanned for so long without knowing it.

That is an interesting point, and may be true, but this problem also applies to the advertisements on HN (e.g. We're hiring designers!). It is my understanding that they don't have the choice to instead link to their blog and instead have t

Not to crush your idea, but January 18 is when Alexis “kn0thing” Ohanian will be testifying about SOPA in front of Congress. I imagine if the testifying were to happen on January 19th the blackout would be then as well.

At the very least Nullable<T> is a lot friendlier to search than T? if you want to learn more on the subject.

Regardless of whether or not Intel's hardware can run a DX11 game well, doesn't it seem to be in bad taste to pretend to be playing a game when in reality you are at best streaming from backstage and at worst playing back a precanned record

Can you actually buy an Android phone for 80 dollars or is that after the markdown for signing a service contract? (Serious question, I mean no disrespect!)

It was a problem with my TV (a Sony Bravia LCD display) so I had to run the sound through the TV and into the speakers instead of directly into the speakers.

Usually it turns off all of the filters/post-processing steps and tries to mimick the response times of CRT displays more closely by sending the framebuffer to the screen as soon as possible. The works to varying degrees of success on a per

Thanks for the details, posts like this are definitely the main reason why I miss attending university.

I think that is beside the point. If I'm understanding the author clearly, the only thing he knew before the ride completed was that there /was/ a surcharge, not the amount he would have to pay. It's difficult to do a cost-benefit analysis

Excuse my ignorance, but how frequently do developers find an application for such a system? I haven't written many external-facing web projects (I can generally trust each of the couple dozen users of my internal applications) so I don't h

It seems like a more accurate term for these demonstrations would be "imageless" rather than "pure CSS".

What sort of latencies did you see in this project while the car was running? Specifically, from the point where you have access to the camera's preview buffer to encoding it, sending it, running it through the neural network, and sending t

Impressive project. How much of the time was spent writing the gameplay code as compared to the "engine". To put it another way, how much of the experience was writing the code to handle VGA and audio out as compared to the scoring system,

A little off-topic, I know, but I found it cute/confusing that after clicking on the PhoneGap:Build link on the blog post ( https://build.phonegap.com/ ), the destination page stated that my account had been created and I should check my em
