Sometimes builds are complex. You have several deployment paths, platforms, modules, features, signing and what not. Then the build is akin to a small program. That’s still reasonable. The problem is that all build tools that allow this mak

Having used Gradle, I disagree. Even if you know Groovy, declarations in Gradle are executed in a certain order and you don't really know what a closure does or what it's side effects are. Sometimes you have to read the source cod

The problems match my experience with Gradle pretty well, and they point to a bigger issue in build systems: you usually can't easily debug the build system. Most build systems try to be declarative, but can't help to have imperat

It’s true that VSCode is more than a simple byte changing tool. But the responsiveness is still unacceptable. A game reacts to my input virtually immediately while doing much more. Also, I have yet to see a proof of the increase in developm

When asked about his opinion of the Apple M1 (which is heavily discussed recently on HN), Blow said it doesn’t matter in the long term, since software will eventually eat up the performance improvements. It’s easy to get defensive about thi

That’s not a good comparison. There are many alternatives to WhatsApp and it’s not a „critical“ infrastructure. In contrast, you sometimes can’t choose your ISP and internet is much more critical.

That’s a terribly generalized advice. At least in the EU companies are obliged to delete your data (I don’t know about the US). Of course whether they delete it is another matter but that would be a violation of GDPR.

Windows just adds this stuff and keeps the old cruft (in some cases it’s necessary because the Win 10 network settings are so awfully lacking you need the legacy option). We now have settings dating back to Win 95 with no uniform guideline

Pinterest is one of the worst sites on the internet and I will cherish the day it vanishes from Google image search results which will hopefully kill it off, leaving space for a superior competitor (one that doesn't hijack 50% of searc

I agree with the part about an URL being less secured than a password. However, it's not security by obscurity. It's just less secure and more convenient. But the URL scheme merely grants you access to a ticket, not the whole acco

What are passwords if not difficult to guess strings? It’s usually safer to create a link with 32 random characters than letting users come up with their own passwords such as „qwer1234“.

That doesn't really matter. Facebook has more than used up its credit of trust. Anyone that is not suspicious when FB messes up yet again hasn't paid attention to what they're up to.

I agree and I doubt anyone starts new projects with JSF anymore. But it’s still very much on my mind when I think about Java web apps. As I said, it’s an image problem, not a technical one. the comment I replied to laid down why the JVM is

These days I’d go with a JAX Rest backend. The frontend is pure HTML+JS (so no server side templates unless they make sense). No dependency injection but „hand-wired“ dependencies at the top level. I also don’t use ORMs anymore. This means

The JVM is vastly underestimated. I think the root cause is an image problem, stemming from a combination of bad programming practices in the past (getter/setter bloat, Factories for everything and unnecessary object orientation) and h

That’s not quite right. Cannabis in the Netherlands is decriminalized. The production is downright illegal, but it’s not pursued by the law enforcement. Other than that I agree with the rest of your comment.

It’s not that the iPad isn’t suitable for work. It’s that if you decide to commit to it and use it for your work you’re now at the whim of Apple. They can wreck your workflow because they have a dispute with the developer. Combined with the

Exactly this. The closest to this would be an i7 iMac but not everyone wants an Aio PC. It’s kind of a bummer. We finally have an iPhone for everyone, even a high end small form factor option. Whoever is responsible for that decision please

I agree, but if we’re being honest, iOS is probably the prioritized platform for developers of apps like Hey that are commercial and used for professional work. Also, Apple doesn’t allow sideloading in the way Android does and PWAs are not
